kelrik Posted January 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Got a question? Does Leica make different focusing screens for the M8 I seem to have a hard time with the stock screen or is there a secret on using the stock screen. Any help will be greatly appreciated. ho_co Posted January 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 31, 2011 Welcome to the Forum! With the M camera, you're not looking at a screen, but through a rangefinder. No, there's not another option. Actually, for most people, rangefinder focusing is much more accurate and quicker than manually focusing an SLR with lenses 90 mm and less. I think a lot of us have become too used to autofocus to realize how quick the M's rangefinder is. It just needs a bit of familiarity. See Jaap's pointers in the M9 FAQ at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/130720-m9-faqs-frequently-asked-questions.html#post1378521 as a good start. The m8 manual (page labeled 104 in the pdf) shows you the two types of focusing the rangefinder accommodates--both superimposition and vernier (broken line). Perhaps you're not holding the camera properly (page labeled 101 in the pdf), and/or a finger or strap is blocking the smaller of the two rangefinder windows (item 1.3 in the first picture of the M8 inside the front cover). If none of that helps, maybe you could be a bit more specific in regard to what kind of problem you're having.
epand56 Posted January 31, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 31, 2011 Kelrik, before the M8 I had two Contax bodies, G1 and G2 that were rangefinder cameras but had a brilliant autofocus system. When I bought the Leica M8 and my first Summarit 35, i unpacked the jewel, mounted the lens, went out and pointed the camera. then I pressed the shutter half way and waited for the camera to focus. Nothing happened. No autofocus noise. I looked puzzled at it and suddenly realized that the good times of autofocus were over. It took me less than a week to get used to it and i would not get back to auto focus for no reason in this world. I also keep my screen off now, because even if it's digital, with the M8 (or M9) is it you that take the pictures and not the camera. You'll love it. jpattison Posted January 31, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 31, 2011 Kelrik, Enrico has raised a point.... Do you refer to the screen on the rear of the camera? If so, you cannot use this for focussing, (so called Live View). The leica cameras use CCD, not CMOS technology, which doesn't allow this. Regards, John

Regards, John While the M8 may not allow a "Live View" on its display, it is not due to a limitation of CCD sensors. There are many CCD-equipped cameras (including Leica's D-Lux 5 and its twin, the Panasonic LX-5) that provide a quite capable "Live View" function. It may be something about the particular Kodak/Leica developed CCD that prevents "Live View" functionality, but I would not make the statement broad enough to cover all CCD sensors.
