Feedback on using Leica R lenses with adapter on M8

You could focus well enough if you bought a Fotoman rangefinder, and fitted it in the accessory shoe. That rangefinder seems to be a copy of the Voigtlander one, and is easily adjustable. Fotoman recommends setting up the rangefinder to be spot on at your most used distance, rather than infinity.

Before cataract operations I used one with the R8, Olympus DSLRs. and a 5D-II using manually focusing lenses. I preset both the lens and the r/f to the same distance setting and moved a bit to coincide the images. It works well enough, but I would not try it with any confidence using, say, a 80mm @ f1.4. Stephen Gandy may sell them, or the Voigtlander one.

It slows you down, but not much more than using an LTM body and Imarect finder.

I have personal experience of using some R lenses like the 16 and 19 on my M8 and they are perfectly usable if a bit unwieldy. Focus by estimate is adequate. However they are big and bulky and whilst the results are quite acceptable I wouldn't go out and buy any SLR lenses to use on an M now. If I already had ultra wides I might invest in an adapter for the rare times when I would find it useful to use them. In my own case I ended up selling off the R lenses as I found that the hassle of using R lenses on a dSLR outweighed the benefits and it was eventually not for me, and it certainly wasn't worth keeping them just to use on the M.
