Enrico,

Thank you for your examples! I'm completely in awe when I saw your photo's. I love how the lens draws in the second picture. You convinced me to try to get a Elmarit!

And about the magnifier, I have to try one I guess to see if I need it.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I would look to buy a magnifier, helps me and I am 34! the patch is very difficult to see moreso in low light which makes the focusing a little hit or miss..

You could always sell it on if not, tend to sell well on ebay.

@mobeyone: thanks for the tip. I had some problems with my friends Tele-elmarit in some light conditions.

Do you use the 1.25x or the 1.4x? The last one is pretty expensive for a small piece of glass. I saw some cheaper versions on eBay but I have no clue if they are any good.

1.25 and my eyes are ok and I struggle to focus the 90mm. People use the cheaper ones and dont have a problem.

Yes its not cheap for what it is but you could buy one used for around £120 of ebay and sell if it does not work.

The 90 Elmarit-M - latest (discontinued version - W H Y ?) should be very easy and dead on to focus at all apertures.

If one has struggles, it has to do with either point, Jaap described. I find, this specific lens pairs fantastically with the 135 APO Telyt for it's very similar handling and focussing, if somebody is into tele lenses on the M.

I use my Elmarit-M with and without magnifier. The magnifier mainly makes framing easier with tele lenses, but I don't see a big difference with focussing for myself.

I also have a pre ASPH 90 Cron (latest version) and have to say, that although, I use the Cron more (f2 and still fairly compact size and manageable weight), it is much more difficult to focus and handle quickly, as the Elmarit-M.

I find the 90 Cron more critical, to focus quickly wide open, than the f1 Noctilux.

If the lens is mainly used for portraits and one is going after a pleasing look without razor sharp skin pores and hair tips, one might be more satisfied with the pre ASPH Cron, although more difficult, to nail focus.

The Elmarit-M is an very easy, compact and light to operate lens, which draws more details and cannot achieve a soft rendering out of the box, when needed (or as thin, a dof or as much of light … ).

I won't sell any of the two - very different lenses for different purposes.

Here is the biggest difference for me between the two:

- thin dof and background rendering with the Cron, but sharp enough in the center:

- lightweight, still rather fast @ f2.8, high resolution and contrast wide open across the frame with the Elmarit-M:

The moiré effect is not from the M8.2, but from the JPG downsizing.

UPDATE: I changed my mind and I bought a 90mm Cron (pre-asph) version. The seller send me and email today that there was a problem with the lens and that he can offer me a mint latest version Elmarit for the same price (might be a sight for me to get a Elmarit and not a Cron). ;-)

I love how the elmarit looks and everybody praises the this lens for all it's qualities. But artistically I'm having some doubts about this lens because it sometimes looks TOO sharp.

I need to see more example shots made with this lens. I would love to see some portraits and some shots made in low-light situations. Does anyone have those for me (or direct me to a decent gallery)?

Warrior, here you are a couple portraits with the Elmarit-M 90/2.8. I think it has a perfect balance between sharpness and depth.

If you prefer the vintage softer look and a delicate sharpness, then this is the Elmar-C 90/4

I know Enrico use to have a 90 macro elmar (latest model)...

He doesn't have it anymore...

Anyway, since we know now that even with an empty Barolo bottle in front of the camera our dear friend Enrico is able to take great pics, I can suggest a nice lens to the OP.

Try a Konica Minolta M-Hexanon 90mm f/2.8.

Size, weight and lens design (?) are almost the same as the Leica Elmarit-M 90 2.8 (latest model).

I tried it once, just some slight differences in coatings e a little "less" corrected (CA), but then again that's a great lens, really underrated.

You can easily find it for less than 400-450bucks.

Beware, explicit review will follow.

If you don't like Mr. Rockwell reviews, please don't click :D

Some may disagree to this link, but here we go, this is the lens I was talking about:

I am simply not getting that...

Mobey, when I bought my Elmarit 90/2.8 I had great problems in the beginning. There was no way to focus it on my M8 while all the other short lenses were performing quite good.

I later discovered that my rangefinder was vertically misalligned. Sent it to Leica along with the 90 and when back it was spot on. Also, the focus on all other lenses was improved.

Maybe you have the same problem.

UPDATE: Thanks for all your replies but I chose to get the summicron 90mm (E55 version). I like the sharpness of the elmarit but I love the softness of the summicron better for the kind of portraits that I'm going to shoot for one of my projects. I just recieved it and I love it. Still have to practice a bit to focus correctly ;-)

But now something else happened! I just saw that I have a so called coffee-stain on my lcd!!!!!!!!!! The camera is still in warranty but this will be the second time that I need to send it back to Solms! The last time I send my camera there I got it back after 3months!

Maybe I need to go back to film and by a m7/6 or het a Nikon...

I'm a bit disappointed in my Leica right now ...
