I got an X1 to have an alternative to my big heavy 5DMarkII"s which I use in my business.

How refreshing it is to grab the X1 and not have all that weight. Its quite easy to use

and the quality is very good. Ask yourself just how big you want your reproductions. The X1 shoots RAW so use it when you need to otherwise just shoot JPEG and I think you will be very satisfied. I think this is the camera I and alot of other people were waiting for from "Leica".

Not too big , not too small and very affordable. It has won me over !

I have to agree, I think it is perfect for me and feels like a proper camera too! If you buy the an X1 after proper research you will not be disappointed.

I only had mine a few days so am still learning, but from what I see, I am very pleased

Jim,

I really like my X1, and have liked it since I bought it a year ago.

However, I have to disagree with your title, it is NOT a good all around camera because focal length is fixed, it doesnt really do macro either.

I think what we can say is it is a very good "bring all around" camera because it is so tiny, and I never missed my dslr when traveling. You are absolutely right, it is hard to lug around a giant and hefty dslr when you can have something so dimunitive like the X1.

CJ,

You're right, I should not have said it is a good "all around camera" . I hope I will get a lot of use from mine.

One thing, I use a "Quad pro" Apple computer which does not have an Intel Processor which is required for "Lightroom". Is there any other way I can shoot Raw Files and still be able to process them ? I don't want to have to buy a new computer.

Any Suggestions ?

Jim

Hey Jim,

Given its size, easy controls which are fun, superb rendering...it will be the camera I think you will use the most.:)

I also prefer the older powerPCs, the motorola/IBM chips were much more stable IMHO than the intel ones. Back then my Macs couldnt crash, these days my macs do hang sometimes although still rare. Also, all the powerpcs are still working, these days breakdowns in the laptops be it trackpad, harddisk, bluetooth, etc,etc think manufacturing standards for mac way poorer likely due to the reduced pricing.

I think the mac's transition to intel has almost been complete, you probably have to use the older versions of LR which support powerpc or other equivalents like aperture but would advise you to invest in a new mac, even the lowest end iMacs are very good. I just got the new Air and it is portable, the equivalent of the X1 for laptops and I am running the latest LR3 on it absolutely no probs.

Or you can sell the copy of LR, its worth a fair bit of dole.

As it is, I think you will find the X1 jpegs to be very good, black and white high contrast is IMO useable right out of the camera. So it the default settings though I normally set sharpening down s notch to medium low.

Supported those old powerpc's and now have run intercontinental mac networks...this is the first time vie ever heard anyone say the powerpc's were more stable...certainly not ime! PowerPC was nothing but beach balls. Otoh, osx early on wasn't great, and os 9 was a crash monster too. Apple's come a long way.

Hmm strange...even my "toilet seat" first ibook is still working...so are my "wall streets", etc,etc My Mac LC, etc, etc. My first intel MB died 3 months into it, then again 6 months later, ditto my last MBP, and my current MBP went to repair three times within a year. The current MBP has problems with recovering form sleep sometimes, etc,etc host of problems. WIth the old macs I NEVER had one crash. I think apple's OEM foxconn has to be the source of the issues. I had one with one letter on the keyboard being sluggish, power leakage from keyboard, etc,etc..........so many problems haha....

So Edward even though I like the way the interface works on the new macs I cannot ever think of them as stable, and manufacturing standards are markedly down since they moved from taiwan to continental china. They are cheaper now so I guess we get what we pay for.

I never had ANY of my old macs repaired, with the current models hmm....as for software stability maybe I did not "tax" the processor back then like I do now so that could explain things.

Maybe, but the old macs were rife with logic board errors.

That said, on my personal MBP this time around.. it's been in A LOT... so hopefully that is a unique and bad situation - not commonly replicated. Actually the only part of this machine that has not been replaced is the bottom case. :/

That struck me as strange though as our repairs for most macs were eclipsed easily by any dells we had, and about on par with the thinkpad line.

Hopefully Jobs taking a medical leave (I think it's an easing out to retirement) won't effect Apple like Gates leaving MS did.

I would believe the problem lies with the current Apple OEM foxconn...with some taking their own lives due to long hours and low pay thankfully they just improved the situation there hopes this translates to better quality management.

I believe the entire apple company appears to hinge on Steve, if he goes, I would imagine the company to be a shadow of its former self. Like when sculley was there.
