i just rec'd "my calling" from nj to ship for the big fix. not sure how they're scheduling these things, hopefully so as to minimize process time.

Please send your M8 to: Leica Camera Inc 1 Pearl Court Unit A Allendale, NJ 07401 ATTN:SERVICE DEPT

We recommend shipping via UPS/FedEx or whatever is most convenient for you. Include a note with your name, address, daytime phone and description of the problems that you are experiencing. You do not need to ship any of the accessories with the camera. Just include the inner box with the M8. Once the camera is received we will forward it to Germany for the update.

I suspect that Leica NJ is waiting until they get X number of units before they ship themm to Germany. That way it lowers the cost of shipping.

just heard back from them on that, ed. they are shipping each week, usually wednesday or thursday, and turnaround time has been running three to four weeks from then until receipt by owner.

I just received the same e-mail as well. We are supposed to describe the problem... I thought they knew that already :D. I was hoping that they would arrange for a pickup as well but nope, it's not happening. Oh, well.

It's a slow process, but it appears to be working. I called Leica NJ on he 5th of January, and explained that I had not suffered the same problems as others. Did I still need to send my M8 in? (Separation anxiety hangs on the line...) Yes, I was told, in a distinctly German way. So I did. A week later I got my written receipt. But it was not until the 17th of January that my camera showed up in their online queue. That is a long time... from the 6th of January to the 17th before it shows up as being in repair... I expect it will come out of the shop on the 27th, and take an additional week to 10 days to get back to me...

Mine is being returned any minute via UPS. Here is the chronology of the process.

Sent overnight Fedex to NJ Dec 5

Sent to Germany Dec 7

Returned from Germany (landed at JFK) January 8

Shipped to me from NJ via UPS January 18 (took that long to get through customs)

Arriving today by UPS January 22

So total round trip from my house back to my house (Chicago area) was six weeks. Subtract a week because of the holidays and it was five weeks. Leica USA and Germany were very good about keeping me infromed of the dates above (in repsonse to my emailed questions) and sent me a UPS tracking number so I could arrange to have someone home when it is delivered.

Robert forgot to mention that on the outside of the box put in big letters M8. That way NJ knows that box goes to Germany for the hardware upgrade.

If my recent M8 repair experience is any indication, what happens next will all depend on what needs to be fixed. I got the same e-mail from Robert Fisk (very nice guy). I sent it in on my own dime, they evaluated what needed fixing (focus issues, very dirty sensor that I couldn't get clean, and a problem with the rear LCD screen. They needed to send it to Solms, and it went over in the weekly batch on January 10th. They will send you a written confirmation by mail. Eventually, once things start rolling in Solms, you should be able to get on-line updates by providing your serial number and/or work order number. They estimated 3-4 weeks for repairs. Once they are complete, apparently it comes back in a batch with others going to the US, then gets sent to me 2nd day.

I also sent in a 90mm Elmarit for coding, but hopefully they are dealing with that separately.

I received my "return now" email today too. This thread certainly offers alot of anictdotal info about how long the repair will take but I have used the camera very little since the green blobs ruined an entire shoot. I am also discouraged by the UV discolorization.

I will wait as long as it takes to get it fixed because until its fixed and my filters come in I just don't expect to use it much.

By the way, for those of you on a Mac, download Opera. Firefox doesn't work at all, and Safari pretends to work, but doesn't in the end (at least for me, right now). Opera works fine.

i was able to get Safari to work but only using the Solms repair number (after the fact, it was on the return receipt when i got my M8 back). my serial number never worked.

I don't mean to seem dense here, but just what is the "inner box"? Can one send in the camera without it?

the grey box, filled with foam with a cutout for the body. and yes, you can send without it, but it's a pretty safe transport vehicle which is why they recomend it. wrap very securely in bubble wrap if you don't have the box.

i'm shipping mine to jersey tomorrow, so we'll start the clock and see how they do on turnaround.

Should I leave the battery inside of the camera during shipment or should I take it out? If I take it out, I am not able to fit the battery inside of the inner box. Is there any problem with shipping cameras with the batteries left inside of them?

Regards,

Larry

Larry,

I shipped mine this afternoon, without a battery or anything else. My thinking is that Leica has plenty of batteries to insert, should one be needed for testing, and it is also not great idea to ship the camera with the battery in place. At best, nothing would happen. At worst, it could short something out. It came without the battery in place, so that is how I shipped it back to them.
