Advertisement Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Hi 5478chrisw, Take a look here FLASHING LED LIGHT. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mgc2010 Posted January 10, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2011 Is your memory card inserted properly? Check the contacts on the card are clean. Make sure the baseplate is closed properly too. There is normally a brief message displayed on the LCD screen warning the above but it's easy to miss.
ho_co Posted January 10, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 10, 2011 Possibly the battery? I'd switch off the camera, remove and recharge the battery, reinstall and try again. Good luck.

I agree with Howard, charge the battery. But it has been my experience that a flashing red light and no other activity isn't a good sign.
Nicoleica Posted January 10, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 10, 2011 One extra thought.... Is your firmware up to date? You can get the flashing light if you have an elderly firmware (About 2 years old or more.) version and try to use an SDHC card. This probably doesn't apply here, but I thought it worth mentioning, just in case.
Valau Posted January 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 10, 2011 It is a known problem with the hardware of the M8.2. There has been two other similar posts over the last few months. My M8.2 showed the same signs, especially after I had put a newly charged battery in. One way I found to kick the camera into life is to keep on pressing the shutter release and the camera does eventually come to life. My M8.2 is still under passport and was returned to the Leica Shop in London for investigation. They returned it to Solms for further investigation and repair. I understand that the entire electronic system has been replaced, except the sensor. On the brighter side the problem does not always occur but it does leave you with a bit of a doubt as to whether the camera will work or not! Shootist Posted January 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 11, 2011 MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELPFUL REPLY.....THE M8 WAS A ( GENEROUS) CHRISTMAS GIFT SO I AM NEW TO THE RANGEFINDER WORLD AND ON A STEEP LEARNING CURVE. SO YOU MAY GUESS MY NEXT QUESTION ....HOW DO I UPDATE THE FIRMWARE???? First what kind of SD cards do you have? Do you have SD normal cards 2GB's or below? Or only SDHC cards 4GB's and above. If your camera has a older firmware the only card it will recognize is the standard SD cards, 2GB's and below. In any event it is always best to use a standard SD card, 2GB's and below, when updating the firmware. Download the most current firmware, 2.005, from the Leica website (it is in ZIP format), un-ZIP that files (if you are using a PC you need to Un-ZIP it. If you are using a Mac the Mac may un-zip it automatically when downloading) and you will end up with a file called "m8-2_005.upd". Copy that file to the ROOT directory of a standard SD card (The ROOT directory is the highest level directory, IE NOT inside any other folder/directory). Place that card in the camera and make sure you have a " FRESHLY FULLY CHARGRED" Battery in the camera. put the base plate on and turn the camera on. If the camera is working correctly it will see the updated firmware in the ROOT directory of that card and on the back LCD it will ask you if you want to update the firmware, Wait at least 3 seconds then hit the Set button, I think it is the set button but you may have to use the arrow button to select YES, to confirm you want to update the firmware. At that point DO NOT turn the camera off for any reason. Just let it do its thing. After about 1.5 minute, OR LONGER, you will see a prompt to turn off the camera. Turn it off for a few seconds then back on. If this is your problem, IE Not having the correct firmware for the type/size card you are using then I suggest your first move it to get a standard SD card and save it for all future firmware updates. If you get no prompt from the camera with the updated firmware in the ROOT directory of the standard SD card then your M8 will need to go back to Leica for repair. Good Luck.
