How I Became A Believer In The X1

May I digress, since I know you have the dlux5. I am thinking of getting the lx5/dl5 for my wife but am confused as to whether there is any difference. Some says the jpeg engine processing is different, others claim the only difference is the badge grip and LR. I would not pay any extra if its just the badge, have you or anyone tried shooting and comparing? Will sure save me some time at the camera store!

Thanks,

CJ

CJ - I actually have a two-year old D-Lux 4. I don't know enough about the Lumix/Leica differences to be able to help you, I'm afraid.

Perhaps if you would induldge me and explain how you see the 'philosophy' behind the x1 it would help me on my path of understanding...

Nope...I can't help a guy who's a pro and shoots with more "elite" stuff than I do or ever will! If you did read the interviews, the "philosophy" is buried somewhere in them or you can simply carry the X1 in your jeans pocket (like I do) and then you 'get' it

PS - nice photos on your site.

I'd be shocked if the jpeg engine wasn't different..albeit very minor. Honestly I'd buy the panny for ergonomics...the leica maybe if I didn't own light room.

The LR may be good for my wife if she wants to do some PP, but I am guessing not. May put that copy on my MBA since I have only a copy and its on my MBP.

But I guess the only way is for me to shoot both cameras at the same time same subject. Will probably do that next week. I hope the jpegs are really different otherwise there's no pt. But I am guessing my wife will like the leica one coz its more sleek, I gravitate towards lx5 coz the grip may come in handy.

Thanks,

CJ

Hi Mark,

Thanks you have explained it very well. I would say that I 'get' the intended philosophy behind the X1. Unfortunately the camera, in my experience, doesnt quite live up to that philosophy. Not to say its not useable or can't make great images.....

Hi Ravinj,

Glad you like the images.

Anyway Mark explained it so well that I now, at last, get it......(....i think?...)

As you say philosophy or not, the camera can make nice images. Although I only carry it with a long strap around my neck!

Have you tried it in a belt pouch? I got one which is almost exact fit and havent looked back since. I think portability ranks high with IQ in my case when I bought the X1. I wanted a discrete camera that is small, silent, takes great photos. There are many camera/lens combos out there that can match or exceed the X1, but none so small at the moment.

Personally I dislike slinging the camera anywhere on the torso coz in hot humid weather it becomes a pain. With the DSLR not much choice really. A camera thumping o the chest or stomach is not my idea of fun haha.

A tiny camera with large organs is what I think the "philosophy" is, if I have actually "gotten it" right.:p

Like a small guy who wants to do big things??!!

Cj,

Your x1 came with two licenses for lightroom...where's the other one or did you use them on lr2?

wrist strap with thumbsup is the only way i now carry the x1- i used to complain about the aesthetics of the thumbsup but it really really really increased the "usability" of the camera

as far as the philosphy of the x1 my opinion (fwiw) : superlative lens and IQ with a no-nonsense no-frills digital back allowing me to concentrate on the image i want to create and with a wrist strap and the thumbsup the x1 becomes an extension of my hand

Only one license bro...

You can use it on two machines, same serial number.

Are you sure about this? I thought adobe always has that policy of having people buy one copy of software per machine. In my office we use PS a fair bit and EVERY terminal/laptop has a copy of its own, no sharing. Thought that was the policy.

Heard also of their "rat out" policy. Cannot verify this for sure but had a friend told me of someone he knew where some part-time workers tipped off adobe on this. The student part-timer got off with a handsome reward and the company was fined by mandatory purchase of a load of adobe software.

Maybe I will check with adobe on this just to be certain. From what I know they are nasty with policing the sharing of software, even if its same owner.
