X1 SHARNESS & FOCUS TEST

Regarding the sharpness & focus accuracy of the x1 I can only say that I am impressed. Sharpness is good right into the corners and focus( when it does!) is good enough.

Enclosed an image made yesterday. I did not specifically shoot it for sharpness so it would be a 'normal' situation for me. I used the viewfinder so central focus point would be a guestimate and tripped the shutter when I heard the 'ringtone' confirm focus.

Aperture at f4.5, ISO 100 and ss 1/160 sec

Processed in Lightroom with sharpness at 25, radius at 25, in other words my 'normal' settings. CA corrected at -20 red/cyan.

Full pic and a crop. Decide for yourself...

Of course I have encountered slow focussing, times when focus indicater goes on but shutter doesnt want to trip and especially yesterday very eratic behaviour where even set to manual focus I coulnt get the shutter to trip. But I shot a lot yesterday and today everything is fine, so I cant say 100% its the camera ( I posted a lot of images on the landscape section under 'rust never sleeps' and all pin sharp). I only have had it since December last year and bought it to use as a 'take with everyday' type of camera so I am willing to forgive its foibles especially since I got it at about a 50% discount! Not sure I would pay the full price for a camera thats not quite sorted, and this being my first Leica I dont have any loyalty, yet!. Image quality so far has been outstanding.

For anyone having sharpness issues I suggest take the same pic with two different camera and send both files to Solms to show clearly the sharpness/focus issues...

This is typical of X1's sharpness.

I just got hold of my nikkor 35mm f/1.4 and it is not as sharp as the X1 at f2.8. So go figure.

But my 85mm is sharper than the X1 at 2.8, and the bokeh on both my nikkors are much better than the X1's, but they each cost the same (almost) as my X1, so I consider the X1 as a bargain since effectively I am getting either a good lens or an okay body free.

I wish the lens had slightly less distortion, its just enough now for me having to correct it which then means I have to very very slightly crop.

Alternatively I cant understand why there isnt a profile for this lens in LR, afte rall they give it away with the camera?

Regarding these ultra fast 35mm etc lenses, reading through many tests and reviews my canon 35mm f2 looks to be sharper overall than the 1.4 version and is already quite useable at f2 and outstanding by f5.6, and thats on fullframe. Maybe not so sharp in the centre but sharper to the corners and about 1/5 th of the price!

Wish these Japanese camera manufactures would make slower and smaller lenses, say f2 - f2.8 but sharp to the corners wide open and right to the end...My contax g2 lenses were sharp from f2 and f2,8 and much smaller and lighter

I see this is your 1500'th post! Impressive!.

Yup, on this point of a special profile I really wished if they got a dedicated X1 profile.

Judging from what I see I guess the new nikkor 35 does not match up to the canon equivalent. But the 85 Nikkor is phenomenal. Guess I will be using more of my X1 for 35mm.

The Japanese has a different philosophy from Leica I guess, its a choice between the "pro line" and the "consumer line" and they somehow think being pro means wanting to have bigger and more serious looking cameras/lenses haha. I applaud Lieca for making superb lenses with the kinda quality at ridiculously dimunitive size and I guess this is one of primary reasons why they are still in business, given their pricing.

The X1 too, $2000 compact. And we are still buying.

Hmmm..already 1,500...lots of which are spent on debate/banter on quiet afternoons at work...

I asked leica that exact question - to a vp.. his response was leica lenses are perfect and need no correction....

:o

Why am I not surprised....:D its leica you are talking about:rolleyes:
