True, Leica NJ took two weeks (plus shipping time each way) to remedy my issue. Overall it was much faster than I expected, but it is very possible that greater EU and USA get considerably faster turnaround time.

OTOH, I wonder if they are working on something that may be occupying more time than usual.

Profile says Malaysia. Unacceptable that he hasnt got the camera back after 2 months though, but of course it depends how the retailer deals with Leica and journey times to Germany.

Allan

Sorry, timezone difference, I must be asleep when the question posted.

I though that Leica has a service centre around the Asian region for something like this. I believe its mechanical and Leica must have a simple solution to it. When I checked with the dealer, they said they sent it out immediately, but I could not verify it. Is there a way to track cameras sent for repair?

Thanks.

If there is anything to really rant about leica this IMHO is it. The turnaround time for repairs can be atrocious. After all, nikons get repaired in under a week here in Asia.

For the higher price we paid we deserve better.

bman - i think there might me a possibility of leica agent - schmidt marketing. this schmidt company holds agency in thailand as well. as far as i heard, schmidt is not an agent of leica anymore and in thailand, schmidt refused to provide the sending-back repair service to the sold camera as well. it looks like leica customer in thailand needs to contact leica directly, instead of agent. this is bad business practice and leica should take any initial step to announce the next plan of southeast asia agent. orelse, better ask singapore leica to take care of this issue.

Hi Veerachai,

I think you are right, Schmidt no longer holds the agency license for Leica anymore. I went to the dealer today to inquire about the delay, and he told me that soon, maybe by next month there will be a new agent. It could be thats what is holding the repair to be longer than necessary, just my guess.

If both Schmidt Thailand and Malaysia loses their license, likely Singapore too.

Thanks for the reply.

You just don't understand Leica. This long period for repair is part f the Leica mistique. You have no

Idea why it takes so long but you forget it is painstakingly being disassembled by hand, (after shipping to China where it was originally made), repaired, reassembled by hand, shipped back to Germany and then finally shipped to you. This takes time and keeps the brand mysterious with a certain sense of exclusivity. :D now you know the secret.

hi cj - schmidt is loosing leica agency in all south asia, thailand, malaysia, singapore and i believed hong kong as well. leica has opened his own store in hong kong, managed by leica and i think it will become more active in the future. i think this time leica is bidding on his own operation in the future market like asia. :)

Sawasdee Krup Veerachai! Thanks for the info!

Was working in Bangkok for 2 years 2002-2003.:)

The Leica boutique opened in Singapore last year, but by "Max Photo" a camera store that I sometimes frequent to buy Nikon lenses.

So I am not sure if they are going to get the agency or not or Leica will be here themselves.

Chok dee,

CJ

cj - thank you for the update, i hope you enjoy thailand.

i think if max photo was so active, there's a good chance that max photo can be the next leica agent in south east asia. however, due to the poor image and service + internal problem of smidt, leica should press a lot of pressure to max photo in order to gain back the creditability.

i believed leica fans has a lot of brand royalty to leica name and with this name, it can keep the customer faith.

come to thailand, let me know, we go for a meal and talk about our leica.

Thanks Veerachai.

Although in singapore it will appear schmidt is still the agent, or at least on the website of leica and schmidt. We'll see....

There are so many things to photograph in Thailand!

Dont worry bout it bro, it may all turn out for the better, who knows?

So schmidt is not the agent anymore, and the new office is in Orchard Road, as am I. So for me it's a good thing.

leica will warranty the X1 for 2 years, doesnt matter what the warranty from schmidt.

I may send my X1 in after a few months coz the menu sometimes bump up and down by itself so I may decide to change the leatherette to the same as the black X1. BTW JS you still owe us the photos of your revamped grey X1 with the black X1 leatherette what happened? Shoot a nice picture of it with your M8 and post please?? :)

Thks CJ. Sound good. I think leica Jz open a agent company by themselves. So the service should be much better control.

I have a black version and so far no peeling skin. Hopefully firmware 2.0 comming soon. Come on leica we all love you so pls don't make us wait any more. :((

Just for the record, I got the long awaited call from the dealer today afternoon. Finally, the X1 has been returned and repaired. I will pick it up this weekend and update again. So after more than 3 months:

Date sent in for repair : 30 December 2010.

Date returned : 6 April 2011.

And btw, I have also asked the dealer to offer my X1 for sale as a second hand unit, if there is an inquiry. I don't think I wanted to face another long wait, should there be other problems. Since the camera has just been return from Leica Service, it should be in top condition. In any case, my count so far is only 270 actuations.
