Rangefinder fault

Dear all

Whilst taking some photo's at close to the near focus distance on my M8 I heard a distinct "ping" from inside the camera. The rangefinder now seems to have seized up. When pushing the roller in gently with my finger it only springs back a short distance, I have to pull it forward myself, it will not snap back on it's own. Move it back and forward (gently) and it feels really rough. The finder frames (and shutter) were upgraded a year or so back. Has anybody else had a similar experience? I've had a quick trawl back through the archives but cannot find any previous posts on this issue. I fear it's back Leica for this one.

Regards

John

John, it sounds as if the spring which presses the rangefinder follower forward must have broken or slipped, particularly since you heard a noise when it happened.

I've never heard of that happening. :(

If it's under a year since you had the frames and shutter upgraded, the full camera is still under warranty.

Good luck.

Although I'm not sure where the spring fits, you can see the backside of the cam follower assembly in Mark Norton's "Anatomy of the M8" thread, the third picture at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/21331-anatomy-leica-m8.html#post224650.
