M8 and Voigtländer 21mm f/4 Color-Skopar

I have been using the Voigtländer 21mm f/4 with my M7 with very pleasing results. I now want to try it with my M8. I have tried to code it using my Match Technical coder kit (coded to the Elmarit M 21 f2.8 ASPH). However the M8 does not identify the lens at all (my other non-Leica lenses work fine with the coder kit / M8). Any idea why the M8 is not reading this kens code?

Thanks. Great explanation of how the 6 bot coding works. Interestingly the post linked to the same codes that I found, which is where I got the idea to use the Elmarit 21mm f/2.8 ASPH code for the Voigtlamder - which isn't working for me.

Leica M Lens Codes

Does anyone know where else I can find cows that might work?

You might need to expand the marks some or move then right or left slightly.

I have this lens and hand coded it and every now and then the camera will see and record a different code, for the 28mm lens IIRC. Removing and replacing the lens clear it up but sometimes I don't notice it until the images are on my PC. I don't chimp much and when I do don't really look at all the info for the image.

Shootist, which Leica lens code do you use?

Shootist, I have expanded the marks as you suggested but it hasn't helped. There don't seem to be that many variables so I'm not sure what to do next. O have used the same template and marker with other lenses successfully (and just rechecked them to confirm that the 6 bit sensor is working). Any other ideas?

Hi All

If I may jump into this thread, just what can be expected in the pictures from the skopar 21mm f4/M8 combo without coding it?

Is it a vignetting and/or colour cast issue?

Many thanks

Colin

mgc2010 - my 21 Color-Skopar isn't coded and I find no problems to speak of. However, my sense of colour-vision is less than perfect so there might be some issues I simply cannot see. But, and it's a big 'but', my wife has never pointed out any colour quirks and she is quick to flag up anything that looks out of place - my 'alternate eyes' you might say.

Vigneting with the M8 doesn't seem objectionable to me. There's some darkening in the cormers at full aperture on a bright day, but then who shoots sunny landscapes at f4? (Okay, okay, I accept that some people actually do that . . .) I notice the vigneting more on full frame slides, which makes sense. I think it's a great little lens - especially as I could actually afford to buy it:)

Hi Colin

Because the M version has a recess all the way around the mount, its easy to fit adhesive white paper label material into the recess where the coding is required (cut with a surgical scalpel to precise size after laying over the slot) then code with black marker pen.

When you try mine out, you can try it with lens recognition on and off, to see the difference, if any.

Cheers

Mike

Pronounced cyan corners, if you use an IR-cut filter. Pretty much (IMO) the only reason any lenses need to be coded for the M8.

I've always used an IR cut filter for the M8. Are there instances where one would be Bette off using the M8 without an IR cut filter on the lens?

Andrew, did you try to hand code the Skopar with a different pen? Did you use a Sharpie?

I run into several black pens whose marks couldn't be red by the M8 sensor.

Enrico, I used the marker that came with my Match Technical D- Coder Kit.

Do you find the Sharpie to give good results?
