57andrew Posted December 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I uploaded files from my MacBook to my iPad, most taken with my M9. The colour looks awful. It is very subdued and has lost all vibrance. I am unwilling to show the images to anyone off the iPad. Has anybody else had similar issues and if so is there anything that can be done to change the settings? Many thanks. Andrew
Advertisement Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 Hi 57andrew, Take a look here Imports to iPad - colour rendition. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted December 25, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 25, 2010 I assume you're shooting jpeg. What colour space are you using?
57andrew Posted December 26, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted December 26, 2010 Yes, Steve, they are jpegs and in sRGB.
Shootist Posted December 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 26, 2010 Yes, Steve, they are jpegs and in sRGB. Are you shooting JPG's or just uploading JPG's made from DNG RAW files to the iPad. Know next to nothing about Mac's and totally nothing about iPad's.
57andrew Posted December 26, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted December 26, 2010 They are DNGs converted to JPGs.
andybarton Posted December 26, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 26, 2010 I assume that they look OK on the MacBook. Does the iPad have any adjustment for the screen - brightness, contrast etc?
57andrew Posted December 26, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted December 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes Andy, they look fine and sadly, the iPad is already set to maximum brightness - other adjustments are not possible as far as I can tell. andybarton Posted December 26, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 26, 2010 Try uploading a jpg straight from the camera. Then try one in a different colour space than sRGB. What software are you using to create the jpgs from the DNGs? Do web pages, the photo section here, Flickr and the like all look OK on the iPad? stunsworth Posted December 26, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 26, 2010 sRGB was what I was wondering about. I've not noticed a problem on mine. Try downloading the excellent free Guardian Eyewitness app and looking at the photos in that. If they look washed out then there's probably a problem with your iPad. At the moment I think it's probably the editing stage that's causing the problem.
57andrew Posted December 26, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted December 26, 2010 I downloaded the Guardian Eyewitness app (and yes it is excellent at first glance) and the colours look vibrant. On the forum the colours also look a little subdued but not dramatically so, similar on Flickr. I am doing the basic developing in LR3 then finishing off in CS4, where they get converted to JPGs. All B&W images look good so I suspect it is a colour space issue. I'll experiment tomorrow. Thanks Andy & Steve for your suggestions. Andrew
57andrew Posted December 27, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted December 27, 2010 Progress, of sorts. I resorted to Plan B and deleted the lot from the iPad, which for files uploaded from the mac can only be done through the synch'ing with the laptop - individual or cumulative deletes from the iPad not possible. I then reimported the images and have noticed that one of the issues, if not the issue, seems to be that the files which look drab are those from the Lumix LX5 rather than those from the M9. I know of no reason why that should be but it seems to be the case. I am also going to use higher quality images for the iPad imports in future - this should not affect colour space but may simply give more pleasing images. Steve, I spent an hour going through the Guardian site today - very impressive. Thanks both for your suggestions. Andrew
57andrew Posted December 29, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted December 29, 2010 Steve, Andy, after a complete reload of my images I was still not satisfied with the results and went back over recent actions. The most obvious was upgrading from LR2 to LR3. Sure enough as I worked through my preferences the External editing was set to ProPhoto RGB not sRGB. Problem cured. Sighs of relief from me. Thank you. Now I need to check all the other pref settings. Andrew
ramosa Posted December 31, 2010 Share #13 Posted December 31, 2010 Good thread, as I'll be getting a Macbook in a few weeks. Pardon a tangential question: Is there a way to move images from a digital camera (e.g., M8) directly to an iPad? That'd make for a sound, compact approach to travel. ramosa Posted December 31, 2010 Share #14 Posted December 31, 2010 The Internet: it's a wonderful thing. I just did a search and answered my own question. There is a connection kit that costs $29. I'll need to get it.
