Testing the D-Lux 5

Hi,

Some of you may remember earlier this year when I tested out the M9. I am a professional photographer and Leica just sent me the new d-lux 5 to test out. Along with a hand grip and view finder. I did my first blog post on it today. I am addicted to the square format option, anyone else?

I did try shooting in raw but could not open the files and could not find a plug in fo CS4. Any ideas?

On my blog I compare it in size to a Canon G10 which is my current point & shoot. As a pro I like to have a camera handy, always.

I also got a nice little leather case, which may be the one I am hearing about on here. It has a stripped interior and pocket on the inside. With the hand grip, the fit is a bit tight.

I will take some pics and post them.

I will have the camera till the end of the month and plan to use it for a lot of my blog posts... each will be tagged for those interested.

You need the RAW processor in Photoshop CS5, or use either Lightroom 3 or Aperture 3.

I'll look into the case for my LX5 (same camera with a built-in body grip).

It's a fun machine for what it is. I use it as a teaching tool for my Basic Digital Photography courses since most of my college students use point-n-shots for the class because they can't afford a DSLR.

Did they provide the optical or electronic viewfinder? I like the electronic viewfinder, but wish the image screen was less course. Perhaps if Panasonic releases an updated version this will be corrected.

Hi Lara. Ed here from Atlanta.

I find your blog and your style of photography interesting. This may not be the place for this but I would like to meet with you and talk photography. Maybe coffee at a place of your choosing along with your significant other.

As to the DL/LX5 cameras you need PS CS5 or LR3.x to read the RAW files but you can get around that by using the Adobe DNG converter 6.3 to convert the RWL files to DNG and then CS4 ACR will read them.

Hope you find this helpful and hope to hear back from you one way or the other.

Thanks.

For those that also use other Camera makers... I am giving away a lensbaby this week on my blog. Sadly they don't make a mount for Leicas but if you are like me and use a Canon or Nikon SLR you might be interested. It is a pretty fun lens. They gave me one to play with and I have been very impressed the results so far. They are pretty cheap.

I posted a series on this scary old house, I shot with d-lux 5. I really love these photos (if I do say so myself) I used the manual mode shooting at 2.8 and between 125 & 250. I am still loving the square format. I processed the images in a combo of lightroom and PS4.

All images were shot in color, so any b/w was done in post.

I posted one more series I shot with the d-lux 5. I "double" processed the images using the picture show app. I actually email them to myself to do this.

I am shooting a human today, some beauty test images with a model and then the camera goes back to Leica. I will miss it!

p.s. I redesigned my blog over the holiday... hope you like it!

Hiya,

I think your redesigned blog has changed it from being very good to fantastic. Really like the look. It is more unisex now....if that makes sense....it was a bit feminine earlier...not that there is anything wring with that.

Your eye is sharp and subjects interesting. Keep up the good work

Lara, your work is great!

I've never been able to do anything with the square format, and your pictures make it seem that the world is only real when seen through a square.

Thanks for letting us know about your blog, and thanks for your incredible images from the D-Lux 5. :)

i love your blog, the look the feel, what you do, all of it.

did you shoot your dlux in raw or jpeg? the photos are great.

Thank you. I have been shooting in jpeg since I only have CS4. If I was keeping the camera I would upgrade and shoot raw for sure.

thanks, i have been shooting in raw and have been very unhappy with the results. i have read someplace that shooting in jpeg yields much better results, and judging by your shots i would have to agree.

i think ill try a weekend in jpeg. thanks again, i really enjoy your site and what you are doing.

No need to shoot only JPG's! You can use the Adobe DNG Converter, V 6.3, to convert the DL5 RWL files to DNG and then open them in any version of PS CS.

To BMC.

The JPG files from the DL5 are not better then the RAW, RWL, files. They are different looking because they have had In-Camera adjustments made to them, sharpening/contrast.

But in the end it is not the camera or file type you are using but what you do with that file after the shot that can make or break a photo. It's called Photography and starts with the setup of the shot, push of the shutter button and continues on until the final output.

Shootist is right, I did a lot of work on the images I shot with the d-lux 5 before posting. I do with all my photos, nothing goes right from my camera to display.

I really rec lightroom, it is such an easy program and great for processing your raw files. I only load my edit, then I do any exposure adjustments, some color correction and lens correction and cropping... then I open it in photoshop and finish it from there.

i agree, and i dont want to hijack this thread, i shoot my m8 in raw and do PP edits. however, i have not been happy with the same with my lx5. in fact im a little frustrated right now. i had an older pani dmc fz8 that i just grabbed and shot. we had two of them and recently decided to upgrade them. me with the lx 5, my field partner a g12. both of us are extremely dissappointed compared to the fz8. the images from that camera seemed to be better right out of the camera than our images after hours of PP from the lx5 and g12. i am struggling to figure out what i could possible be doing differently.

my shots with the lx 5 seem not to be sharp, definition seems to be lost, not on all of my shots, but on enough to make me take a second look. and when compared to the fz8 the lx5 fails most of the time, especially if you use any zoom at all.

again sorry if i hijacked this tread, and i understand that it is often the indian and not the bow.

thx bmc
