Well, an entire week without a peep.. I expected them not to communicate. I'll probably just wind up with a ring of the doorbell in 5-6 more weeks and have ups hand me a package. For sure Leica should institute a system that shows the workflow in the repair process. It would cost them very little in software or time, even if there are a bunch of magical faeries writing all notes by hand on pads right now.

So Gar based on your last flippant response we can draw as fact your previous comment has no merit as it's not based on even a remote guess, let alone any concrete fact.

And we can draw the conclusion that you've never learned anything about QC systems, production management, statistical sampling, et al.

I'd be surprised if component and labor costs weren't close to $1,000. Then you have to add development costs onto that.

As well as rejected units, corporate overhead, any incentives to dealers... and of course a (heavily taxed) profit target.

LOL, you know nothing about me. Man what a jerk you are, get over yourself, and welcome to my ignore list too.

I highly doubt that. Generally when companies test products, they have to simulate years of use in just a few days. That means non-stop shutter action for hours upon hours at a time.

Somehow I don't see the connection of shutters and so many skins peeling off.

Sent mine back too or rather they sent UPS to collect it! My scroll wheel is also oversensitive but I asked them to tighten the two top dials as they both shift far too easily leading me to miss the first shot each time! I asked them to install the latest firmware update (probably wishfull thinking:rolleyes:). I'm in the UK and expect it to take around 3 weeks but of course we have Christmas in the middle of that so I'm not too hopeful for it's return until the New Year. Looks like our stricken X1s will be having their own party:D

I was actually quite disappointed they didn't sort ups out..by the time you send it 2 day and insured, it's ~$100. Compared to what it would cost them on their corporate account, which is $15-20. Even if they end up billing the client at least sort it out for less. I couldn't image paying to ship and insure an m9 to them.

The top plate of my X1 has also been slightly deformed around the flash unit. The hole for the flash isn't 100% circular any more. I haven't dropped the camera but there can have been something pressing against it in the bag, but certainly no big hits. Imho the top plate should be made much stronger.

I had the same problem some months ago. I did not drop or squeeze the camera but the top plate was damaged and the flash was not functioning anymore. I went back to my dealer, but he did not want to send it back to Solms, because he did not believe me that this was a manufacturing problem. Anyway after a little bit of pushing the flash start to pop up again.

Sorry for the topic-drift, but could you tell us more about the right-sizing issue? Is it difficult to lay-off workers in Germany?

First 6 months on the job you have no protection -- it's a probationary period (time frame might have changed since I lived there). After that, it is very difficult to get rid of you. I had friends that worked at Daimler who told me about entire departments that were essential filled people that they were stuck with.

Downsizing is covered by the Betriebsverfassungsgesetz -- basically, there's a lot of planning and notification required, and can take several months.

Dismissal of individual workers is covered by the Kuendigungsschutzgesetz, which is similar to the above mentioned law.

In either case, severence is required under German law.

Because it's so hard to get rid of people, employers try to be VERY careful about who they hire.... it's one of the factors that contribute to unemployment rates in europe that exceed what we'd consider acceptable in the US.

I just received the paperwork from Solms regarding my X1 repair. I'm rather alarmed to see that under "general condition of product" it states, traces of use, display scratched:eek: I did NOT send it in with a scratched display. I have treated the camera with kid gloves and in fact have owned many, many cameras and NEVER scratched a display. What to do next anyone  Aside from this, it requires a new rear dial unit.

Don't freak- there are two types of scratches. Your display could look perfect- but then hold it in direct sunlight. I was appalled to see that mine, while appearing perfect, was scratched thousands of times from the cleaning cloth bag that came with the camera. They are microscopic and only appear in direct intense sunlight. I had them replace it and got a Giotto's.

...which by the way is one of my biggest disappointments with the X1.

Why can my $200 iPhone have a glass display that's unscratchable but my $2000 Leica have a plastic display soft as butter? Why did I have to spend $30 on glass Giotto's protector using German glass probably manufactured down the street from the Leica factory?

As awesome of build quality as the Leica is, it's a huge letdown to interact with the display or the battery door...

Thanks bsgraupner. I have only used a lens cloth to clean the display screen but if I haven't noticed that it's scratched then I probably won't notice when it's returned to me. My worry is that they've made a Big scratch ! I've been buying cameras for the last twenty years and have never had to return one to the manufacturer. So, Leica, this is a first for me too. Very disappointing :(

  • 3 weeks later...

Well it's back. I would say that the service has been very speedy especially considering that I sent the camera back just before the Christmas/New Year break. I have the same lens and LCD display but the rest of the body appears to have been replaced. The grey is a few shades darker and the rough black part seems rougher and blacker. The tiny scratch that I had on the edge of the top plate is magically gone so I know it's a new plate;) The two dials on the top plate now click resoundingly into place and there is no tiny tiny wonkiness to the rear batter compartment which was not a bother for me but I know there are varying degrees of this problem. I'm now waiting for my battery to charge so that I can test the original problem that I sent it in with, the dancing menu display. So far, it feels like I got a new camera :)

so how much is it going to cost you for the repair?
