haroldp Posted November 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 30, 2010 To my knowledge, there has never been an asph. version of the 50 'cron at all so far. H. That is correct. At f2 the current 50 summicron is close to perfect. For F1.4, (summilux) asph elements are needed for correction. I have both 'cron' and 'lux' in 50 and often use the 'cron' because of how it 'paints' . Regards ... H
Keith (M) Posted November 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 30, 2010 A quick look on Leica's website shows the current 50mm lenses to be:- 50 mm 1:0,95 LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. 50 mm 1:1,4 LEICA SUMMILUX-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. 50 mm 1:2 LEICA SUMMICRON-M 50 mm f/2 50 mm 1:2,5 LEICA SUMMARIT-M 50 mm f/2.5 So no Summicron ASPH... stunsworth Posted November 30, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 30, 2010 The Summicron design is a few decades old, but is a wonderful lens. As said above there's no ASPH version.

delander † Posted December 3, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would not let the fact that the 50 summicron is not an ASPH lens put you off. I have one and find it very sharp at f2 with nice bokeh and rendering. It is a small lens and focuses very easily and smoothly. Into the light many say that it suffers from flare but that has not worried me. Stopped down it becomes even sharper and a bit more contrasty, in my view equal to the 50 summilux ASPH (which I also own) for all practical purposes. The 50 summicron is a small lens and aesthetically looks really great on the M9 or other M cameras. If you really need f1.4 then the 50 summilux ASPH will suit you better, but it is a bigger lens and generally more stiff to focus. Of the two lenses I use the summicron 80% of the time. Hope this helps
Keith (M) Posted December 3, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2010 I was assuming that the OP's concern was with the miss-description of the lens and therefore it raising questions about the seller and lens. I know it would concern me!
tobey bilek Posted December 3, 2010 Share #9 Posted December 3, 2010 There are no ASPH 50 Summicrons. Their lens designer has stated they are APO, but not advertised as such. There are some flare problems under certain conditions. Personally I would buy the 1.4 or last 2.8 recently discontinued or 2.5 Summarit. If you put flare with 50 Summicron in search, you will find the threads and the fix with a cut out baffle.
ramosa Posted December 4, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2010 I was assuming that the OP's concern was with the miss-description of the lens and therefore it raising questions about the seller and lens. I know it would concern me! ditto. it's a great lens, but the "mistake" in terms of this aspect of the listed item would make me wary that other "mistakes" may exist (e.g., lens condition).
