X-1 lens hood from SK Grimes

I've traded a couple of e-mails with Adam Dau of SK Grimes regarding possible lens hoods / adapters for the X-1 and have received the following information.

One option would be a long threaded adapter that would screw onto the camera and allow the use of a filter or a lens hood with 52mm threads. Rough price for this piece is $65- $85 +s/h.

A second option would be something similar to the multiple ring Lensmate concept where the price could be as high as $250.

I'm not sure if these are volume prices or onesie-twosie, but Adam does note that doing small production runs would affect the costs.

He would also need a camera for a couple of days to get the necessary information for the design. I would be willing to send him My Precious for that.

Let the discussion commence...

A similar design to the M9 titanium would be awesome.

See, that'd be a deal breaker for me. I think it'd ruin the camera -- it reminds me of what they've done to the Ranger Rover: take a dignified piece of equipment and make it look like something Wayne Rooney would own.

This is interesting and constructive. I'm still puzzled that Leica took the idea so far as mention in the manual and then appears to have dropped it.

Very perceptive:) He lives near me and drives a grey Overfinch Range Rover.

A lens hood would be nice but it has to be instantly fitted and removed ; not sure if I would want it threaded.

Maybe a two piece? Screw adaptor with some kind of bayonet mount?

I've inquired about a two-piece adapter. The first part would screw onto the camera and replace the ring that Leica has on there now. It wouldn't be any longer than the current ring but would have threads that the second part would screw onto. The second part would be long enough to have a filter on it with the lens extended. Then if needed one could screw on a third-party off-the-shelf lens shade. I hesitate to ask about bayonet mounts as I'd like this to be as cheap as possible. Bayonets to me imply higher cost (more difficult to make) and also limit the number of other things you can add on where filter threads aren't as restrictive.

I would love to see that two piece unit in the form a a lens shade that came with a plastic cap that fit the hood rather than the lens inside.

I say keep it simple with a classic look - the hood should screw onto the adapter and look like an M9's 35mm lux hood, which I believe is the most classic look (if it isn't, the most classic look should be the hood made). It would be great if I could screw off the lens hood and screw on a filter.

Ideal price I think: $99 for adapter with hood. Extra price for filters on same site. Even if the filters are readily available it will be extra way for him to make money on this so it's worth his time.

Biggest turn offs for aftermarket Leica items- any huge brand markings that aren't Leica. Thumbs up is hugely successful and I believe partially because they never block the "made in Germany" writing and have minimal markings themselves. It's stupid for owners to care, but Tim Isaac was brilliant to think of it.

Here is a classic hood look: Google Image Result for http://leicarumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/new-leaic-35mm-lux-on-m9.png

I wrote to SK Grimes and got a reply today.

Thank you for the inquiry. We can assist you with fabricating a custom hood

and matching cap for the Leica X1. Such a custom hood is $65- $100 depending on design +s/h. It

is best to have the mating pieces on hand as we will be able to guarantee a

perfecting fitting hood.

The next best option is to specify the thread diameters, pitches and

technical specification. See the following link for information on thread

specifying. How to Measure Screw Threads . Please note, the

hood will be guaranteed to fit the measurements, not necessarily the lens.

Price for a matching cap is $25 - $30.

-------------

This isn't unreasonably priced at all, but I'm 2,600 miles away.... doesn't anyone in Rhode Island own an X1 and want a lens shade and cap??? I think if we get one made, the rest of us can order the same one.

cheers,

+1 for purchase but I am in Chicago.

As for thread measurements, others have screwed on the Nikon UR-E8 adapter meaning they screwed on the female end, which this website says has the measurement of M50x0.75 female (Making Digital Camera Microscope Adapters). Problem solved?

Is this going to be a one piece hood or an adapter that we can screw a hood and filter onto?

sounds like we could have whatever we wanted... the quote was for a custom hood.

Personally, I would prefer a one piece rectangular one like you see on Leica rangefinders, but would settle for anything :-)

I too have an email from Adam Dau quoting a price somewhere below US$100 for a hood and matching cap for the X1.

My taste in this sort of thing is "keep it simple." From reading the various posts in this forum, I would prefer a simple metal barrel just long enough to let the camera lens be fully extended, with a female thread where it attaches to the threaded camera mount, and a female thread at the lens end for attaching filter/polarizer/shade/lens cap or whatever.

Unfortunately my problem in this scenario is that I live in San Francisco so getting a camera to Woonsocket RI is not a very attractive prospect. But somebody must be nearby. I've never thought to try, but surely Leica could be forthcoming on the very precise specs of the mount. Really, it would seem to be the least they could do.

And just incidentally, as a geezer who has had it with lugging an SLR and an assortment of lenses including a zoom that I could barely tolerate--I really like this little fellow. And I could care less if any part of my now very modest kit carried a brand name that was anything but Leica.

I've been working on a kit of my own based off a Nikon UR-E8 but machined down to be exactly the length of the extended lens. (In other words, it doesn't have those external threads on the end anymore.) Here's a question, what size filter threads would you want?

The end of the lens is only 37mm, so filter threading could be anything from 39mm to 58mm.

It costs me about $40 to produce them with either a metal vented round hood or a polycarbonate square hood. Actual Leica metal square hoods are over $100 a pop.

I'm a little uneasy about using the Nikon barrel (UR-E8) as a prototype. I have one and when I go to attach it to the camera mount it only threads on for about 1/4 turn, which to my mind is not good enough. I haven't been able to spot any jimmied threads on either the barrel or the camera mount, but I am really inclined to think that the threads are not a perfect match but there is just enough engagement to make what appears to be a tight fit without a full engagement of the entirety of the thread.

Comments, please.
