Guest flatfour Posted July 11, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 11, 2006 Great pity the old pits aren't still around. This was taken in 1958 with a Periflex 1 on Kodachrome 25.
abrewer Posted July 12, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2006 Great shot of the course when I was a young four-year old race fan, Tony. Sadly, we all know the reason for the substantial embankment in the photo. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of the past. Allan
elansprint72 Posted July 12, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted July 12, 2006 Allan thanks. Wonderful atmospheric shot, Tony. One other thing which has changed: there always seemed to be hundreds of Gendarmes "controlling" the crowds around the pits, this time I saw two motor-cycle cops in the paddock, and that was it! Presumably the French tax-payer cried "enough!"? Cheers, Pete.
Guest flatfour Posted July 12, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 12, 2006 Pete - You are absolutely right. There was a gendarme every 10 yards along the straight before the start and amongst the crowds for a while afterwards. During the night you always saw one or two wandering around but I never saw any trouble. I was a student when I went in 1958 having won an essay competition in Sporting Motorist. The other winner was the late Colin Glanfield, a very skilled Leica photographer. It was he who taught me a few things about 35mm. He was using a single lens Contaflex at Le mans. I might have some other slides of Le mans somewhere. I'll try to find them
