Determined thieves will always find a way of using other people's pictures without paying or even giving a credit. However rather more end-users use work out of ignorance of the legal position. Such practice is inexcusable. Because of this, I try never to post anything on the internet in any form if I do not wish it to be used freely without my permission.

 

The fact that the image may be very small and low resolution is no deterrent to others using it on a web page. That is where most theft ends up published.

 

Orphan works present another challenge, but that is another story.

According to Getty images, a rights managed image of 400 pixels used for commercial use on the web in the travel industry for a period of 3 months is worth about $700. It appears to me a lot can be done with such a small image. I appreciate getting paid for what my photographs are worth.
