darrellberry Posted January 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I intend to spend some time with my d-lux 3 just taking b/w images. i find the b/w preview on the screen (effect->b/w) useful for composition/framing, but it seems that this conversion actually gets applied to the stored image as well (ie there is additional image processing going on in the camera). I'm used to using RAW format (and intend to keep using RAW), and I'm concerned that the pulldown to b/w done in camera may well be inferior to what ACR or C-1 can do (which is what I'm doing now if I want monochrome images) Ideally I want to be able to preview/frame shots in b/w but leave the RAW data untouched in-camera, doing all processing on my Mac from a colour RAW image (I thought that RAW inherently MEANT colour, as it is raw sensor data?) -- which doesn't seem possible (is it)? If not, does anyone have an opinion on whether the in-camera b/w conversion raises quality issues? thanks d
Advertisement Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Hi darrellberry, Take a look here d-lux 3, raw & b/w. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robert_parker Posted January 16, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2007 Darrell I haven't done a great deal of B+W, preferring colour - but have done some research on this recently and own a D-Lux 3 Generally I suspect more experienced practitioners will tell you that you're better recording your image in colour and then converting using appropriate software - I know a lot of people like the 'Alien Skin' plug in converter and I have used Fred Miranda's B+W workflow pro previously although many swear by the desaturation controls in photoshop. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/landscape-travel/13675-old-pier-weston-super-mare.html Is desaturated in PS3 http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/13571-best-way-turn-color-pictures-into.html Is a helpful generic discussion on just this subject. http://www.leica-camera-user.com/nature-wildlife/13680-dark-rose.html Is a Fred miranda conversion but probably done a bit excessively If you look up Steve Unsworth's posts, there are lots of examples of 'Alien Skin' at work !! ps. Who says I never learn anything.....
darrellberry Posted January 17, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted January 17, 2007 that's all good stuff, thanks -- i know the d-lux 3 is a compact, but given that it includes raw, does it seem a little strange to anyone else that there isn't an option to simply preview in monochrome but leave the RAW data intact? d
rob_x2004 Posted January 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2007 Darrell, RAW is RAW is RAW. Your camera stores RAW plus a JPG file for you to preview. This JPG file of course is in the format of the cameras settings which you have toggled to B&W. The RAW file is still there separately, intact and unprocessed. Maybe if you do not have a RAW converter, when you up load you are only uploading or seeing the JPG file? Browse your instructions for file types. dogberry Posted February 18, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 18, 2007 Darell, Rob is correct. If you set the camera effect to B&W and the quality to RAW, you get a B&W JPEG and a completely unaltered, full-color RAW file. As he so rightly points out - RAW is RAW is RAW!
