Paul Hart Posted April 15, 2011 Share #21 Posted April 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Paul, sorry for the delay in responding.Generally I try to avoid using high ISO settings unless vital. For static scenes indoors I use a small Leica tripod or similar and low ISO. In extreme circumstances, such as shooting young children indoors, I treat noise in LR3 or, if something really special, I use Noise Ninja for finer control. However, any NR succeeds at the expense of sharpness, to some degree. Hence my working within its generally accepted range. David: many thanks for this. However, since my post I have sold my DL5 and bought a black X1. The improvement in IQ generally and noise levels in particular is very clear. I'm delighted with the X1. Advertisement Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Hi Paul Hart, Take a look here D-lux 5 vs Leica X1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dan States Posted April 15, 2011 Share #22 Posted April 15, 2011 As an owner of the x1, the m8, d-lux4, s90 and lx5 I can say that the x1 produces superior files to all of them. The m8 simply can not keep up regarding noise and color accuracy. The x1 files also have more headroom in the highlights (raw files) and if you are a jpeg shooter the m8 simply stinks. Indeed I have long felt that it was only wishful thinking that makes us see more in the m8 than there really is. While the files don't need additional sharpening there is no evidence that I've seen that it actually RESOLVES more than later 12mp CMOS sensors. Actually to the contrary. It was good in 2006 but time has marched on The lx5 is a great compact zoom camera...but runs out of gas at high iso. The s90 is small but the lens lets it down in raw with lots of ca. In it's favor it's the only true pocket camera of the bunch.
Solar B Posted April 15, 2011 Share #23 Posted April 15, 2011 Well i have to say that being an X1 user as of "today" , this thread does read very well as i was of the impression that an X1 would not be able to compete an M8 under any circumstance . Being an Astronomer Optics are the priority but i shall have to rethink reguarding cameras. Brian
StephenPatterson Posted April 15, 2011 Share #24 Posted April 15, 2011 My wife uses the D-Lux 5 and I use an X1 and M8. It's great to have the Lux5 along, and she is able to capture some really great images, but mostly snaps. At first I wanted to get her an X1, but the zoom is really important to her. I also like that she can shoot video and get some killer macro shots that I can't get. I know it's overkill for her to use any Leica as a point and shoot, but I like the way it looks on her! In short she loves the D-Lux 5 and I like the X1/M8 combo. Best of both worlds (until my M9 arrives)!
sblitz Posted April 16, 2011 Share #25 Posted April 16, 2011 can't speak about the x-1 but i have an m9 and dlux-4. for me, the difference between the lux4 and lux5 wasn't enough to change, perhaps the lux6. the combo of the two is great and i still use the dlux4 quite a bit, especially in situations where af and a flash are important. MDCT Posted March 5, 2014 Share #26 Posted March 5, 2014 Got both of them in my bag. I use the X-1 the most. It just gives me usable files all the time. I pull out the dl5 for macro and backup.

It rewards thoughtful use. Since I bought mine new at launch, I have noticed how more modern software has enhanced the results. I use higher ISOs which I seldom did at first. It is a little gem and will reward considerate ownership.
