I bought a book 'Brilliant Mac OSX Snow Leopard' which may not be the best and most comprehensive but is OK for beginners. I dont think I'll be going back to Windows, even 7 anytime soon. By the way the glossy screen is no problem, I use a mid-grey background in anycase. I'm trialling iwork at the moment but dont think Pages can produce files that are suitable for offset printing. Jeff I changed to imac 6 months ago after using MS windows for about 12 years.No real problems in using it or setting it up.The accessory I bought with it was Apple one to one training package which give you virtually unlimited 1 hour slots in the apple store of you choice for 1 year for about £75.If an apple store is not in reasonable distance then pos not a good solution but I pass the Manchester store daily and training starts at 8.00 am. Has anyone tried it? Jeff I haven't used Pages per se for offset printing, but I do know it can export files to PDF, which is perfect for printing. That is, if you understand fully how Acrobat works. Any advice on USB or Firewire or both for safety purposes? Jeff 3X is clearly not the best standard, is only CMYK, and is used by some publications, profiles are important too. Major publications in France use the ECI coated v2 300%. Now for books, the situation is different, you don't necessarily need an X norm, you may or may not use spot colors, and your total ink limit may be over 300%. It all depends on your stock and your printer. You'll have to input this settings in the Acrobat engine. If you load PS cs5 "growl" is loaded by defaul but it can be uninstalled.There is an article in the new issue of MacUser about growl and how to install and uninstall.The only reason I am aware of growl is I just came across it ,read these posts and just recieved the mag this week. delander † Posted April 23, 2011 Author Share #92 Posted April 23, 2011 Hi Fred, When I was on a PC I had a full set of PS, Indesign and Acrobat (I am a retired book/journal designer). Now I 'm using the imac I have already upgraded my PSCS4 (windows) to PSCS5 (mac). That was not cheap here in the UK. So now I'm contemplating Indesign CS5 - another expensive upgrade. I was hoping to get by with Pages. Indesign can produce a pdf to virtually any printing standard, I certainly dont wish also to get an Acrobat upgrade.
