FenderP Posted October 26, 2010 Author Share #21  Posted October 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) FenderP, In my case I would want the defocus for background clutter.  But shouldnt you get the background sharp at f11 or f13?  Cheers, CJ  Valid point and good suggestion. f11 or f13 doesn't work well in all lighting conditions. I just did a test shot at f8 with ISO 800 and there was much less defocusing overall.
Advertisement Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Hi FenderP, Take a look here DL4 to X1 to DL5?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

The other way is to change the vantage point so you'll get more of the table straight on, instead of having so much distance behind the subject. Otherwise there is little chance of taking a nice shot in dim circumstances, this will apply to any camera we use.  But IMHO some bokeh is so desirable, so our food in focus "pops" more... Coach Posted October 26, 2010 Share #23  Posted October 26, 2010 Hi folks, I've picked up a DL5 the day before leaving for a trip in Vietnam. I had the DL4 and I switched for the new Model. The first impressions are very good, the zoom extension to 90mm is perfect for portraits and the flash for fill ins. For backup, I use my iPad, the avchd vidéo will not transfert, so an annoter device (hyperdrive) is required for complete backup I am still in Vietnam and I have not been able to check the results on a big screen. This new camera is for me a complement for my M9 and in some occasions the first choice. The DL5 is really pocket sized and versatile enought for travel situations. I cant compare to the X1, but I will recommand this new model as an enancement of the previous one.  Gérard
MPJMP Posted October 26, 2010 Share #24 Â Posted October 26, 2010 I had the D-LUX 4 and just upgraded to the D-LUX 5. Before placing the order, I thought very hard about getting an X1 instead. My main camera is an MP rangefinder and the digital compact would be a companion to it. I decided to stick with the D-LUX series for now, simply due to the versatility it offers. The video, macro and zoom features come in very handy. If I had gone for the X1 I would have missed those very useful features. When I want the full "Leica experience," I still reach for the MP and a roll of film.
len_gee Posted October 27, 2010 Share #25  Posted October 27, 2010 I bought a DL4 a few years back and have had the X1 pretty much since it came out. The DL4 is with someone else now and I've been using the X1 exclusively. It's made me a better photographer and I love its IQ, but I find myself missing a few things - namely a bit of zoom, better macro capability, and a bit of stabilization (although the handling of the X1 is good and having the right settings IS really is a bit of a non factor, but not a complete non factor on the X1). So I find myself in the position of wondering if the X1 - for all the IQ, natural colors, DNG out of the camera, and great low light capabilities - is the right camera for me. I am not an interchangeable lens guy and I don't need a million cameras. I'd rather have one.  I had the opportunity to buy a DL5 for a good price, so I'm going to see if maybe it's right and if I'll miss the X1's IQ. Maybe I will, maybe I won't. Maybe the X1 will be the camera that sticks it out.  Has anyone else had the same issues?  Sounds to me like a step backward in image quality. Why not just get an M8.2 or M9 with some good lenses? How much do you stand to loose if you get ride of your X1 and buy the DL5?

And I'm also not looking to spend another $2k+. M9? Ha. Talk about the opposite direction from the DL5! Â Money wise I won't lose much if I wind up selling the X1. Cirrus1 Posted October 27, 2010 Share #27 Â Posted October 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am sort of in the same boat. I lust after an M8 or the X1 but the DL4 pretty much does everything I want. I am just a hobbyist (25yrs). For me, I only print on 8x11 paper and 99% of my shots now are Jpeg B&W, the DL4 and the Digilux 2's I have cover that in spades. The only way I will upgrade is if concensus is the DL5 has a much better IQ/Dynamic Range or they announce an upgrade to the X1 that resembles the specs of the Digilux 2 (great fixed zoom, analog feel, etc, etc). I am done with system cameras and all the gear that go along with it but I still want a little lens flexibility.
FenderP Posted October 28, 2010 Author Share #28 Â Posted October 28, 2010 I think my final verdict is to stick with the X1. The DL5 showed up today and I didn't even open the box it was sent in. I care more about things like low light shots and overall IQ. Don't get me wrong, the DL4 (and presumably the DL5/LX5) did a decent job with night shots, but the X1 is head and shoulders above. I got very good shots out of the DL4 and I'm sure I'd get the same out of the DL5, but you can see the "Leica look" in my X1 shots whereas the DL4 shots were above average digital camera shots (if that makes sense). The DL4 was a joy to use, but the X1 has definitely made me a better photographer. Â Do I miss a bit of zoom? Yes. Do I need video in a camera? No. I'm sure I'd use it occasionally if it was there, but it's a tool for just taking pictures for me. Â Since money isn't the issue, I'll just keep and use the X1. Images from the LX5 look like they could have been shot with almost any P&S. While images from the X1 look every bit as good (in some cases better) than those from my M8.
