haha lipsticks and fake blondes! I like it!!!

I just received it in the mail!

it's a very very nice camera, it's so nice I'm afraid to hold it too much haha...

I didn't have Lightroom, so for me there is no option to upgrade for 89 bucks...

even though it's the same "car sold under a different name," it has different firmware from the panasonic, the firmware is like comparing 87 grade gasoline to rocket fuel! (yeeessss Leica being the rocket fuel haha)...

Enjoy!

Steve Huff thinks so too.

From Steve Huff's review.

Quote:

I will say right now that if you want to save $300 and you want the same camera then you can easily buy the Panasonic LX5 RIGHT NOW for $499.

And in his review he uses all the specs from the LX5. Why? Because they are the same camera.

Yes the user interface is different but as it has been said many times, even by all the reviewers, the hardware is the same.

Really I ordered the D-Lux 5 first but then with the known delays the Leica usually has after 2+ weeks of waiting I canceled my order and bought the LX5.

ThInk what you want but the facts don't support your thinking.

So just what are they putting in the water over there is South Carolina?

I have had a love affair with Leica since 1972 but sometime the real Leica nuts are very funny.

Happy birthday, first of all. And because it's your birthday, I don't want to spoil your anticipation to much. However, the D-Lux is nothing but a lipsticked Panasonic. You know, the pretty brunette, who pretends to be a real blonde. And all for a meanwhile 80% higher price (in the US), i.e. the Pana goes for about $450 versus $ 800 for the "would like to be Leica". Without necessary handgrip for the slippery latter, that is.
Yet, showing no class you did anyway.

Lets add the next sentence as well, OK?

"You will get a one year warranty, you will get a different body style (with grip) and you will get lower end software. The Leica D-Lux 5 will give you different firmware, different body style and looks, a 3 year warranty, and better software. I am hearing Lightroom will be included, which is a GOOD thing."

Some, myself included, don't have LR2 to upgrade from. If PS CS5 will open the DL5's RAW files I will sell the unopened, unused LR3 and recover some of my "loss".

For those interested in reading Steve's review, one can find it here.

BTW, taking something out of context is what the politicians call "The Potomac Two-Step".

Enjoy it, it will deliver excellent results :)

You will get a download link, Leica site, to register the camera and download the software, I think. Just like with the M9. Leica is not supplying a CD and license key with each camera.

So there is no chance of you selling the software. At least not legally.

What I took out of the huff site was not out of context.

And yes CS5 works with the LX5/DL5 if you have the latest upgrade to ACR 6.2. and in any event the DL5 RAW files are DNG's.

Please, this thread is hilarious! ;)

There's no need to disparage someone's taste because he bought a different one than you.

Hmm. I might change my stance, though, if one of you bought the Panasonic in pink.

everyone seems to love the d-lux 4, isn't it also the same as another panasonic?

why isn't anyone giving the d-lux 4 crap?

and firmware is enough for me to buy the upgrade, let alone the lightroom and warranty. You can't beat a 3 year warranty!

firmware is the brain of the camera... don't be jealous because you don't have a d-lux 5 baby!

Jack, you need to understand human nature.

When you board a crowded train, everyone already on-board stares at you as if you are, er, Jack the Ripper. You are invading "their" space, you see, and they dislike you for it. You slink in and hide behind your newspaper. At the next station, you stare along with everyone else at the new arrivals because you are now part of the "club".

So it is with cameras. People who buy the Panasonic are emotionally committed to it, as are people who buy the Leica. Each feel the need to justify their decision; the Panasonic purchasers want to be seen as cost-conscious, not cheap, and the Leica purchasers want to be seen to be getting value for money through an improved "package" and some unconfirmed firmware "improvements".

To each their own. There is no right or wrong. Buy what you want, and use it in good faith.

Regards,

Bill

People did comment on the DL4/LX3 similarity/sameness, 2 years ago.

Not jealous one bit. I have the exact same camera as you and saved $350. Thanks.

Later today I will take picture of all the setting screens from the LX5 and post them you do the same from the DL5 and we'll see what the differences are.

I suspect not much other then possibly using different names for something that does the same thing.

But then this might deflate your ego.

Have a nice day.

But then this might deflate your ego.

I rest my case...

Is it really necessary to, as I believe you colonials say, "piss on his wheaties" (whatever they are?) So you saved some money... big whoop. It does not give you the right to take a pop at somebody who is clearly very happy to have waited a fraction longer, paid a little more and got exactly what they wanted, with the added benefit of a higher resale value, eh? The man is clearly happy, leave it at that.

lol it's fine!

I was going to make the comment about the resale value also! A few years from now let's see how much that panny will pocket him compared to the Leica!

I do firmly believe that although they are the same camera, the firmware will make the cameras different, and for all we know, maybe it will make them vastly different!

I understand he's trying to justify his purchase, but for me the resale value, the extra warranty (have fun buying a new camera after 2 years if your camera craps out!), the name brand (bling bling!), the software, the firmware, and the sweet Leica accessories are just all sooo worth it!

I mean heck, I even purchased the 3 year $111.99 accidental protection plan. Covers absolutely everything but theft. (I've had bad luck with cameras haha)...

To each his own!

But I am the proud owner of my first Leica, even if it is made in Japan. It still says Leica and it's authorized by them!

Hi if you look on the side of the lens cap there is two holes this little thing is used to hold the cap on to one of the cameras strap lugs so that when you take the cap off it can hang there and you will never loose it.

You thread it threw the holes in the cap and attach it to the camera lug or camera strap.

Cheers Jan still playing with my dl5.

Sorry Leica but I could wait and the difference in price made me switch.

LX5 $457.95 @ B&H Upgrade to LR3 $100 = $557.95. Will arrive on or before 10/15/10.

Was told END of October for DL5. And we all know what that means, sometime in November.

Just ordered my DL-5 from B&H photo last Friday, and just received a call from UPS it will be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait. My first Leica. I have never been so excited. There is no doubt that the Red Dot makes a difference. Patek Phillippe vs Timex. They both do the same thing. It's just that "I know" I have the best. Its personal, it's not showing off. It's not the money. It's can be unpretentious.

Yes it is to hold the cap.

It is actually made to go on the other strap lug. But I like it better on the same side I have a wrist strap on.
