phancj Posted October 19, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted October 19, 2010 you take photos of the cabinet(s) with vintage gear? Yes, I did. I will post some if you like. They were displaying vintage models with new ones like the M9. Quite cool to see the old Leicas in mint condition.

phancj Posted October 19, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted October 19, 2010 Much as I like Leica as a brand their vintage models in the display look so much more robust than their model digital counterparts....those old models look like tanks/ parts of submarines! sparkie Posted October 19, 2010 Share #9 Posted October 19, 2010 Thanks. Any vintage M stuff? -- eg, M2's, M4's, and 60's/70's lenses?
phancj Posted October 19, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted October 19, 2010 Sparkie, I'll go look it up thru my files, though I hope I'll recognize the Ms haha, BTW forgive my total ignorance on this, what are the models in the two shots? Looks old but nice.
sparkie Posted October 19, 2010 Share #11 Posted October 19, 2010 Top photo = 2001 Leica "O" Series Limited Edition Replica (so not that old) Bottom photo - left = not sure, a screw mount leica, I'm not knowledgeable on SM's. Someone will give you a definite model
andybarton Posted October 19, 2010 Share #12 Posted October 19, 2010 The bottom one looks like a IIIg, but they need to find a copy which isn't beaten up like that one (not hard, there are hundreds around in mint condition). And they need to know how to set the speed setting dials...
sparkie Posted October 19, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 19, 2010 Yeah,I was gonna say its an atrocious example. In a shop like that I'd expect to see a mint to mint- M3, M2+Leicavit MP, M4, some black paints. And some real exotic lenses. I'm reasonable, not even asking for the super rare vintage stuff
phancj Posted October 19, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted October 19, 2010 Yeah,I was gonna say its an atrocious example. In a shop like that I'd expect to see a mint to mint- M3, M2+Leicavit MP, M4, some black paints. And some real exotic lenses. I'm reasonable, not even asking for the super rare vintage stuff With the popularity of the vintage cameras I think they're all sold out. The proprietor probably sold every last one for a high high price. Spoke to a leica dealer and they told me many from the PRC are shopping in Singapore for M9, and are paying a S$2,000 premium to get ahead in the waiting line for pre-orders. This was in Feb this year but I suppose the M9 is now readily available so less of this. Even the X1 is sold out at the moment, as are all the 35 and 50 lux and cron. I was all psyched up for the M9 then and they said no lenses, and no definite date of delivery either. This is consistent with all the dealers I called up. The M9 is available though, they suggested I buy the camera first. Told them what the heck for? To look at it while the warranty passes me by? andybarton Posted October 19, 2010 Share #15 Posted October 19, 2010 All they have to do is find decent examples and put a "Not for sale" card in front of them. On the other hand, the implication could be that, even after a 50 year life-time of working hard, your Leica will still work and still look like a decent camera. Not sure if that's true anymore, but that's the implication.

The old ones look pretty indestructible to me:p In fact i was contemplating getting a M7 new instead of the M9 but thinking of old days of using film no instant gratification lack of competent labs nah... giordano Posted October 19, 2010 Share #20 Posted October 19, 2010 It's a III or IIIa, certainly not a IIIg. It's hard to see, but I suspect that the speed dials are in the positions they would be in after making a 1/2 second exposure.
