Please Excuse my Ignorance - Number of Shutter actions

Paul--

In the EXIF data of each image there's a field "Unique Image ID," which gives the number of shutter actuations in hexadecimal.

Use your image processing or viewing program to display the metadata, find "Unique Image ID," and copy the data into a hex > decimal converter.

As for the latter, you've probably got one in the 'calculator' program that came with your computer. Or google "hex converter."

Enjoy the camera!

Hello Howard

thanks for the information but I can't find unique image ID in any of my software EXIF for either my Leica or my Nikon D2xs. I'm using Capture one for the Leica and Nikon software for the Nikon I've also looked in Photoshop 7 ( yes I know ancient history now ) but although I can find exif date settings in Photoshop and Capture one I can't find anything like Unique Image ID !

I think the problem must lie with the software you are using to display the EXIF data. The image viewer which comes with Linux shows for the JPEG images in the IMAGE DETAIL section the entry you are looking for. It's called ImageUniqueID, though.

Hi. If you have Photoshop, you should hopefully have 'Bridge' too.

If you open a file in Bridge, you can see the 'Image Unique ID in the Metadata box. :)

Below is an example.

Paul--

1) This is a field that Leica includes in their M8 and M9 files. I don't think you'll find it in Nikon files.

2) I'm afraid Photoshop 7 won't cut it in this case. The program has changed so much that you wouldn't recognize it today. :(

If you're on a Mac, OS X comes with an image viewer called "Preview."

Open Preview.

Open an image file.

Press Cmd-I (short for "Information").

In the window which appears, select "Details."

Scroll down to "Exif Properties," under which you'll find "Image Unique ID."

If you're not on a Mac, I'm sure Windows offers something similar.

Or you can also download an "EXIF Reader" for your system. You can google the term and choose from many different ones.

Good luck!

For a search, the exact name can be very helpful

The name as cited has to be used with a grain of salt, anyway. I noticed that all examples given in this thread show the name with spaces in between. I re-consulted my image viewer, and it shows the name without any embedded spaces. Hence, we can assume that the names shown are programmed into the EXIF viewer and that the EXIF data itself does not actually contain the names as shown. They are added by the viewing program, it seems.

If you happen to use Flickr online you can get your exif data through that for each shot. I too use photoshop 7 and couldn't find the unique ID but no probs with Flickr.

Thanks for the useful info on converting this number to show the actuations. My M8 has done 3500 or so. Is that a lot? I bought it secondhand a couple of months ago.

Regards

Colin

Hello and thank you one and all for all the replys. I now know that my second hand M8 has done around 6050 shutter actions. I don't of course know if that is a lot or a few. compaired to one of you who has a S/H M8 with 3500 it guess it seems quite a lot. But somehow mine doesn't seem that many to me. What sort of shutter action numbers do other peoples cameras have?

Okay so some stunning new information for everyone, you can actually work out the number of shutter actions using photoshop 7 ( by the way i was so pleased with the other person who admitted they too were still using PS7). Using Photoshop 7 the Unique actions number or whatever it is call is EXIF Tag 42016 - at the very end of the exif data. Now that is going to get you all to reinstall photoshop 7 just to have a look isn't it?

go on lets tell each other just how many photos we take with our M8s

Thank you again to all of you. I am very impressed with the number of people who bothered to reply

Paul--

Boy, some people love punishment! All I can say is, congratulations on fetching the data from your version of Photoshop.

You and Colin ought to start a forum subtopic just for users of Photoshop 7! :) I remember how hard a time I heard learning it, and I have just as much difficulty trying to keep up with the continuing upgrades. :(

Okay, I'll bite. Just under 5000 in my case. So, okay, I'm a gear freak, not a photographer. :p
