Cant imagine going with the 90mm summicron. My most used lens with be the 28/2 and the 50/1.4asph but when I need reach I will want the 90mm with me. The 75/2 is a great lens but close to the 50mm in FOV. I like the 135/apo as well but its much harder to use ...so the 90/2 works the best all around. Its larger and heavier than the elmarit-M but the speed can help . It handles like a dream and I can compose ,frame and focus easily. A big factor for me is that I always shoot with two bodies so I can have a wide angle and a normal or short tele available. If you shoot with one body it will force you toward the wide and normal lenses and reduce the usage of the 90mm. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Bangor Posted October 2, 2010 Share #44 Posted October 2, 2010 I have two lenses, the 2/35 ASPH & a 4/90 Macro, after trading around a couple of 50s & a 2/75. The 35 is wide enough for me & the 90 ensemble gives me tele & modified macro. I've come to appreciate the compression of the 90 in landscape scenes. I use it a lot for protraits even in the street, the extra FL is a bonus over the 75. I often take 28, 35, 50 and 90 as my working lens set. Or to put it another way, it is about YOU see the world with your own eyes, and how you want to take photographs. I for one LOVE the 90mm focal length, regardless of the camera I use. So I do use my 90mm Leica lenses extensively, love them for both landscape and portrait photography. If I would be allowed just one lens, chances are I'd pick a 90mm lens. In the M3 viewfinder, it's very easy to focus, although it's a bit large and front heavy. The 7% (that's a very liberal estimate...) of the time that it's attached to the front of my camera makes it worth it. I'd rather have it than not have it. I don't use it on the M2. To the best of my knowledge it is in perfect condition. It has been used once and has had a filter on all of the time. It is 6 bit coded, was bought new in 2008 or so and is the latest model. I assume they will have it up for sale very soon. I have no purpose in posting this other than to help a forum member who may want to purchase a 90 cron ASPH. Posto 6 Posted October 13, 2010 Share #57 Posted October 13, 2010 Over the past 30 years I had accumulated both versions of the TE, an Elmarit Titanium and a wonderful silver late '90's Summicron (pre-asph). In view of the performance of the latter, especially for portraits and general use if slightly stopped down, I have dumped all my other 90's to buy among other things a 24mm Elmarit (a fantastic lens). I have been very happy with this move, and in fact am considering getting an additional user 90 pre-asph Summicron, due to it's versatility and relative compactness (little bigger than the Elmarit) for carrying with me on my trips. Although I have also used at times the 75 Summilux, I find it preferable in it's R incarnation of 80mm and have owned one since 1982. In addition, all my M's have always had the 85-92 finders (M6J, M3) which I find helps considerably with facilitating the use of a 90mm lens. In practice, about 25% of my M use is with the 24 Elmarit, 30% with the 90 Summicron, and 40% with the 35 Summilux pre-asph. If (when) I finally buy an M9, I feel that this will increase my usage of the 90 to at least parity with the 35. By the way, I also feel that the 90 Summicron silver has, due to it's relative rarity, significant upside potential as far as prices are concerned. The 35 and 50 get used most of the time, with the 90 being used about 10 - 15% of the time. However, the images are excellent and I wouldn't be without it. If you ask what other people think this will be meaningless.... as far as you are concerned. Not to be rude, but "how often" has nothing to do with it. If you can capture a special photograph that only a 90 mm will provide: that's the point. I have three 90's , Leica and others... I will not start another blab session about which is "best".
