Rick,

Hopefully it should be raining luxes around the land over the next week or so. I don't know how many, but I keep hearing that the "recall" was legit, whatever they fixed, close focus is perfect and I am much relieved that the defocus is not as wild as I had feared.

I don't actually have a 50lux, but it seems smaller than the ones I have seen, yet its bigger than I had hoped for. (comparing to the CV 35 1.4 ha ha) it turns out the Heliopan filters do not fit under the hood, tread is 46mm but the filter edge is 48.02 space inside the hood is 47.97 soo the hunt is on for diet filters. he he.

Contrast and flare control is top, see the portrait in the people forum.

Guys whether you want to believe it or not the recall of lenses that hadn't been sold to dealers is LEGIT. Leica won't say what went wrong but there was a recall. Don't you think it makes perfect sense considering the production halt? For those that already own the lens, don't get upset like it's an insult. If yours works fine then thats great, but there were obviously some changes that needed to be made before rolling out further batches and good on Leica for doing so. I'll be receiving my test sample tomorrow from Leica to review in my upcoming Leica M9 review.

LOL.. no I simply meant that the rumored recall which many think never happened, as far as I know it did happen, lenses were in the USA and were returned to Germany. naturally it is "legit" personally Im glad as the point for me in this lens was to have the best possible 35mm lens, if the guys in Germany did feel a need to tweak a little more, then Im glad they did it. :D

Absolutely. It doesn't even mean the ones that 'were' sold had any issues at all. Leica, unlike Canon and Nikon cannot afford to have a major recall on this lens, so it's halt of production and stock recall seems like a logical choice to ensure everything is up to spec with the new latest and greatest.

I'd really like to see how this fairs against the new Zeiss. As much as I love Leica, I have a feeling the Zeiss will be better.

As I posted on another thread ('two dead M9s') yesterday, my information was that there was a 'mid focus' problem, in certain cases, that had now been rectified and that new lenses will start shipping 'shortly'.

Leica have been unable to keep up with global demand for its lenses due to the enormous success of the M9. They are ramping up production and have employed more staff but these people still need to be sufficiently trained.

Bo, how smooth is the focus 'action' with the new lens? My (previous version) 35 Summilux ASPH is buttery smooth, whereas my 50 Summilux ASPH is less pleasant to use and requires a rather more deliberate effort. Have Leica managed to incorporate the floating elements into the 35 without stiffening the focus action?

Ian,

The lens seems fairly smooth, but firmer than what you are talking about. there is definitely a penalty to the floating element, though it is not really something which I notice using the lens.

Maurizio, the hood cap is sitting at home on my coffee table, I will get you the number tonight.

They a shipment just made its way to some US dealers in the last 2 days. My test sample is very impressive so far. Bokeh is much better than the samples i've seen so far. Reminds me of my Noct 0.95 actually. Of course being a 35mm it's not quite as smooth as the 50mm but very good. Will be comparing this against the previous model in my upcoming M9 review.

Firstly, I'm more a 50mm than a 35mm guy.

Secondly, I don't think it has the magical drawing that i.e the 50 lux ASPH has.

It sure was good, but not as good as my 28/2 ASPH or 50/1.4 ASPH.

And I felt was a lot of money for something that didn't feel special. For $5000 it should be perfect in every respect, and I don't think it is (at least not to me).

When I first got it I was very happy (maybe a part of that was that I owned a lens that few had) but after a while I realized that I was missing something.

I got my money back though:)

Thanks for this very useful information!, also because I can infer that your taste resembles mine (not knowing the new 35 yet)

Hey Bo, the picture you posted of your lens is without the hood and I see the outside hood threads. You probably already know this, but incase you don't, there is a present at the bottom of the leather lens case for your lens to wear.

Rick,

Yup, I found the little decorative ring, figured I would leave it there as the only thing which will happen is scratches. besides I use the hood pretty much permanently, next I'm taking a leica UV/IR to Steve to see if he can put a Helio pan ND in the Leica filter frame.
