Why still no X1 preset in LightRoom 3.2?

Looking at the LR 3.2 camera/lens updates, I still do not see the X1.

Is this still a function that there are not enough of them out there yet or that they just cannot figure it out. I know this was covered a while ago, however, this new LR update seems to have missed it again.

If Leica ships a free download of LR 3, seems all models should get some attention.

I don't think that you are looking hard enough:) It certainly IS there. It was there prior to LR3.2, so if you are looking at a list of things that were updated in 3.2 it would not be there. The one you want is "Adobe Standard". Are you sure that you are not looking at a JPEG file? The option will only be available for DNG files.

Dumb question, perhaps, but what does "embedded" mean? I assumed it meant that which was part of the camera being used - in this case the X1. I have switched back and forth and don't usually see that much difference.

Embedded just means what the camera has interpreted as the colour rendering, if you like. So it is some default instructions which go along with the file but can be replaced or varied without detriment nor permanent change to the captured Raw information.

I agree that there is not a large difference in the rendering between the embedded and adobe standard profiles. That means that Adobe thinks that the camera got it pretty right if you like :)

You can freely swap backwards and forwards and of course the Adobe profile can be edited or a completely new version made if desired. For example if you had a preference for say reds or skintones or whatever to be rendered a particular way there is nothing to stop you having your own custom profile. That is one of the advantages of starting with a DNG in this instance. In Lightroom you can also choose between their older (2003) processing engine or the current (2010) one as well. There are differences in noise reduction and sharpening especially in that instance.

Thanks Geoff, I appreciate your response very much. I am brand new to Lightroom, thanks to the X1 and just in time, I have to add, since Aperture 3 started behaving very badly just after the last RAW update.

I'm very pleased with LR and though I still have a lot to learn, I couldn't be more pleased that I was able to receive it gratis thanks to buying the X1.;)

Yes, but there is no distortion preset is there?I don't see it. I guess I'll have to make one unless someone has shot a grid and cares to share. I've never done it before, so I'll have to look into distance and other requirements.

Because the X1 has a pretty regular form of barrel distortion I think you could just use the distortion correction in LR3 to create a pretty good correction preset. Dial in a touch of green CA correction and your profile is made.

I think they haven't made a dedicated profile because the X1 is not exactly the biggest selling camera out there and the lens is already pretty good, so even with the adjustments you are only gaining a small bit of quality. CA correction is, in my opinion, more important on X1 RAW files than distortion correction.

Best wishes

Dan
