miscbill Posted September 13, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just wanted to share a strange experience. Somehow the corner of an SD card broke off inside my M9. I sat down to download the day's images. My card reader would not read read the card unless I kept pressure on the card at just the right angle. When I tried to insert another card into the M9, it would not got into the slot completely. I guessed that something was inside the slot and, upon inspecting the card, finally realized that it had broken. I was finally able to use a paperclip to fish the broken bit out of the M9. But it was tricky to find the sliver of black plastic wedged deep in that narrow slot. Still baffled as to how the card was broken, unless it was somehow defective from day one. But I guess that's unknowable. bill

AlanJW Posted September 13, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2010 What brand card? Never had this happen. I use Sandisk and Transcend. But there are lots of counterfeits and no name stuff out there.
miscbill Posted September 13, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted September 13, 2010 This is a 8GB Kingston card. I have an identical one (bought at the same time from a well-known camera store) which shows no signs of being less than perfect. And I certainly don't intend to disparage Kingston here. I've always had good luck with their CF and SD cards both over the years. The counterfeit suggestion is interesting. Hadn't even crossed my mind. I don't see any details of the printing or molding on the cards that make me suspicious. But I'm definitely no expert there.
ho_co Posted September 13, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 13, 2010 Bill, I haven't had this problem, but one that may be related: On one of my older SD cards, I seem to have pressed the "lock" lever toward the back, unlabeled side of the card. That caused a crack in the rear cover plastic. (Since I don't normally use the "lock" lever, I don't know for sure how it happened.) In your picture, it looks as if the corner broken off may extend down as far as the "lock" lever, so it might have started to break from that point. I'm glad you could get the loose part out, and glad you posted the picture. Maybe you've started a new trend that others will pick up on, viz "My M broke my card." Oh, and welcome to the forum!
