Tsungtak Posted September 9, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted September 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Picked up my camera last night. The packaging is really nice, the first thing I noticed the camera feels really solid, has a little weight to it. Then I noticed it had a nice leather smell to it. Like getting a new watch with a leather band. Be sure to read the Instructions. It certainly helps in understanding the camera. It is similar to other digital cameras but much simpler. I like the magnification on the screen, the auto-focus speed is OK, like a DSLR with an off brand lens. But it is accurate and I like using the LCD to focus with, I think this might help me shoot straighter pictures. The LCD could be bigger, but then it would make the camera bigger. I thought I would miss the view finder but so far I am good. I like the little knobs on top, my only complaint is the numbers are too small. So far I can't seem to make it shoot longer then 1 second without using auto. Â The flash is cute, just make sure you don't have something closer to you then what you are shooting otherwise it will be underexposed. Â The images so far are very good, the high ISO is really good. Later this week I will compare it with a D700 with 24-70 2.8 nikon zoom

phancj Posted September 9, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted September 9, 2010 Glad you have good 1st impression of the X1, it's hard not to like it. Â If you want shutter speed above 1 second please turn to "+1" and use the rotary dial to set the number of seconds. Â I tried the 24-70 on a D300, not a D700. The images are better on the X1. Â Enjoy! Â CJ
BB W Posted September 9, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted September 9, 2010 Hello and I'll add my welcome, too, Tsungtak! I'm happy your first impressions were just a good as mine. I forget how long it is that I've had mine...not that long, but I'm still infatuated. Â Good points about reading the manual - and thank you phancj for that +1. All reminders and bits of information help store things in my brain.
Tsungtak Posted September 9, 2010 Author Share #5 Â Posted September 9, 2010 Wow, I just took a picture of my daughter eating breakfast in the kitchen at ISO 800, 2.8 and 1/40th, amazed at how sharp and good the colors were. Went outside and took some pictures, again amazed at how good the pics were.

One thing I have learned is that putting the camera in automatic, although sufficient for some situations, falls short by overcompensating the ISO in low light (i.e. indoors). Just as you have found, when you get everything right manually it will provide you with some amazing pictures. Enjoy your new camera!

mrdawkins Posted September 9, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted September 9, 2010 I picked mine up last week and whilst it is a dream camera my own perception was that it isn't that solid. In recent times I have had a Ricoh GRDIII and a Canon G10 and both of those cameras were in my opinion very solid. I also have an M8 which I would deem to be of solid build. Â So I have on order a Luigi case and a Artist and Artisan wrist strap and then I will feel a bit more confident about the cameras feel. Â But I guess we all have different opinions on this. Stunning IQ though :-)

Stunning IQ though :-) I agree, the build and design of the X1 is unique, it evokes very drastically different response for different people.  I really like the retro look and the feel and finish on the metal parts, as well as the blocky design. My wife does too, as do many of my friends.  I showed it to one of my colleague and she was like: "What the hell is that grandaddy's camera doing? Why would you buy it? Even if you leave it on the streets nobody would want something like tat??!!"  Then she saw the photos I took, jaws dropped, and she said she hated this camera more as all her wrinkles are too sharp and prominent:D

If solid can be judged by the heft of an M8 then the X1 does fall far short of that. I suspect DSLR users would be disappointed by the lighter weight of the X1, but compact camera users would be OK with the heavier weight of the X1. mrdawkins Posted September 10, 2010 Share #13  Posted September 10, 2010 That's well put.  I fitted the Giottos screen today and the Gordy strap. Somehow the camera feels better! Can't wait for the Luigi case though

I suspect DSLR users would be disappointed by the lighter weight of the X1, but compact camera users would be OK with the heavier weight of the X1. Â I disagree, coming from a DSLR I felt the lighter weight liberating. It's great. Â Tried the M8 and liked it, but thought it a tad heavy. If I do not think I need interchangeable lenses then honestly I do not see myself getting the M8 or M8.2. THe IQ is great but not drastically different from the X1. The M9 is a totally different story, and I may gladly live with the weight, even though I will probably just stick to a 35mm lens. THe option to change lenses is a nice thought though but for macro its probably back to DSLR and for telephoto the same story since I think VR is important. Â So at the moment it seems like me and my X1 is going to be together for a while...
