How's everyone's X1 holding up?

It's almost like as if a part of the community here is happy when somebody posts something negative and/or a complaint. Moaning galore revitalized... in different threads...:(

I believe that the rust on the hotshoe is a first and only so far. It's either an incidental/unique flaw or something might have happened to this specific unit. Otherwise more of us would have it. There are quite a few heavy X1 users here.

Sharing experiences, views, discussing issues and problems is a good and valuable thing on forums like this. I helps manufacturers to get/keep a feel with their customers, improve future products or services etc.

But the amount and seemingly inexhaustible determination of the moaning, complaining and Leica battering on this forum is something I've rarely seen. On any forum. Even from people who don't even own an X1 or a Leica in the first place but still feel the need to keep shouting to the world what's wrong with it and that they won't buy one etc. I mean... :o

Maybe I'm alone in this but this 'Leica pissing parade' (sorry for the words) damages the atmosphere and joy of this forum imo. This a general observation, not about his thread.

Richard.

Agreed 100%. Could be jealousy for some..after all, Leica is a premium-priced product.

Meanwhile the detractors WILL NOT stop us from enjoying this little gem, will they?

Some have valid points to make, but for those without any experience using the X1 I dismiss as a sad case of sour grapes.

To lighten this up a bit, a night shot from the X1. China town, Bangkok. I think I'll call the X1 the little prince of darkness... :D

Gosh I love this camera for it's low light - high ISO capabilities!

BTW is it just me or do the forum rules for posting images force you to squeeze quite some life out of them. 800 pixels and only 80% jpg quality barely reaches the 300K threshold.

Superb shot Richard!

Chinatown is called "yaowaraj" haha loads of food there, hope you tried durians??;)

Yup, I am struggling to post pictures nicely too, every time I post a pic and the result looks horrendous compared to my original...ah well...

Durians! Ha ha ha... cliché as it sounds, the smell kept me firmly away from them. :)

I struggle with the settings too. The advice is not to use external services like Photobucket and Flickr but these (and others) do allow better file quality.

If you follow the rules, then you have no problem showing decent photographs here. I have no problem at all.(Please... post them in the Photo Section... this is not the place, as we have "discussed before" for non-topic related photographs)

If you subscribe to the forum, your size limit is increased to 500kb. You may want to consider this if you feel that 300 kb is too restrictive.

(when the forum started, we had only 150kb to play with ;) )

Yesterday, someone posted a full res, 1.2MB image via an external hosting site. I had to spend time bringing it to forum rules just so that it could be seen properly.

Hi Richard,

A little trick that I've found handy for keeping within the rules, but still being able to post a decent picture, is to display the picture on my computer at the appropriate size, and then to take a screen-shot which I post. It's much easier than spending a lot of time messing about with JPEG quality settings and re-sizing. I wouldn't suggest this technique for printing, but for images that will only be seen on a screen, it works quite well. :)

Speaking in terms of technology that would be a much worse way to compress than an export from Photoshop or light room. Much much worse.

I agree, it's not a method intended to replace a carefully prepared JPG export. It's just a handy trick I use for making quick small files for posting on the forum. It's far quicker (On a Mac anyway.) to knock out a partial screen-shot (Cmd-shift-4) from a hi-res image that it is to prepare a carefully sized jpg file. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

I have had my X1 since March, 1st shipment to Dallas. You have to remember this is not a M9, yes it feels plastic, the labels on the buttons on the back rubbed off the first week, and I get more lens fair that I would like (but I stretch the capabilities much more than most taking pictures at the beach into the sun etc.) Mine stays with me in the grey travel case, it has been to 7 counties so far, it is well traveled.

At the end of the day it is only $1999 compared to it's brothers that is pretty low price. I have gotten great images and photographs from the little guy. It is what it is, just enjoy the pictures you get and don't worry that it won't fall into the category of look at my 20 year old camera...

For someone else's camera I would say-let it be if it got beat up this soon it will get beat up again if you send it back, so why be without it for any length of time. For my camera off to NJ asap.

I had to send a camera to NJ a couple of years ago for a CLA - be sure to get it there before the Christmas holidays. I had sent mine in early December and didn't get it back until late January.

To follow up-

Leica was awesome enough to replace both the LCD and the top cover under warranty! I bought the Giotto's and will install it as soon as the X1 arrives. They also said it wouldn't be a problem to get it back to me for my gig wednesday with it. Pretty great people.
