sanyasi Posted August 24, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I used the iPad as backup while in the field, but transferred the photos to my computer from the SD and Compact Flash cards. I was having trouble finding a way to delete the photos from the iPad. Two phone calls to Apple produced this result, which may not be obvious. On an Apple Computer, there is an Application called Image Capture. Open it. Under DEVICES (lefthand column), select your iPad. Then in the lower-left hand column, check Delete After Import. I imported to a desktop folder, which I deleted after the import was complete. Then click IMPORT ALL. The photos were removed from my iPad. I realize that some people have indicated that LR is also a way to transfer photos from the iPad to the computer, but I didn't want these added to the LR catalogue. I just wanted to delete them. This is a good technique. This took about 15 minutes for 550 RAW files I was told if I imported through iPhoto that I would also be permitted to delete the photos from my iPad, but that process was slow and ineffective. I gave up after seven hours of transfer time. Hope this helps someone out. Jack Siegel
Advertisement Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Hi sanyasi, Take a look here iPad and Removing Imported Photos. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pleeson Posted August 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2010 What about this: In Photos app, select Photos at top menu, then click icon at far right of menu bar. You can then select the photos to delete (or email or export) HTH,
sanyasi Posted August 30, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 30, 2010 I would have to try the process again, but I think you are failing to draw a distinction between photos imported through iPhoto and those that come in through the camera connection kit. My experience was that relevant menus were grayed out when I tried to use them with photos that had come in through the camera connection kit. The Apple support people confirmed this after talking with technical people within Apple. My sense is that the difficulty in deleting photos is intentional. My sense is that Apple is trying to protect users from accidental deletion before the photos have been transferred to a computer. You will note that the iPad doesn't have a Finder or Windows Explorer feature that allows users to see the file structure and files on the iPad. This is at the heart of the problem. IMO, users should be able to delete photos in the field without having to be connected to a computer. Steve Jobs is a little too paternalistic for my taste. Hopefully someone is working on an app. Jack Siegel

pico Posted August 30, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 30, 2010 May I suggest a very useful little iPad program called GoodReader. I use it to manage MyDocuments, read books, download from servers, and it's got the best FTP client for the iPad. Great interface, too.
sanyasi Posted August 31, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted August 31, 2010 I'll take a look at GoodReader. I bought it last week to deal with pdfs, but will rethink it in terms of photos. Thanks Jack Siegel
