ptu Posted August 20, 2010 Share #21 Posted August 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) You can turn sharpening off, or simply use raw. But I do think the jpegs are useable and very nice compared to other cameras, although this opinion is obviously not shared by all. I find the color rendition and image quality very good in the jpegs right out of the camera, though if I want to do more PP I use the raw files then. I share your opinion about OOC jpeg. And I have few times used it when I know I am not going to have to for some pp (post processing - pixel peeping). I do like to take max out of the camera. After all, we paid 1,5k € for it, thus why not to use it to the full.
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hi ptu, Take a look here About to buy an X1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
unitedhowl Posted August 20, 2010 Author Share #22 Posted August 20, 2010 Okay, So I tried out the X1 today. The build quality is great, handling it with the optional grip was superb, I didn't find any issue with where to place my thumb and I liked the aperture and shutter knobs alot. What I did find very tough was focusing, kept trying to shoot closeups, more than 60cm away from the lens of peoples faces, the camera would lock the exposure but on the exposed shot it would totally lose the focus. The dude showing me the camera was also having trouble doing this. I'm a bit worried about the viewfinder because I'm naturally drawn to using one rather than the LCD. I think I need to have another play with it, I definitely ticks alot of boxes as I need something a little more advanced than a normal compact, but if the focus is something I can't get used to then I don't know... Will have another go soon.
JeTexas Posted August 20, 2010 Share #23 Posted August 20, 2010 For shots that close, you need to set the Auto Focus to Macro, or switch to Manual Focus.
unitedhowl Posted August 20, 2010 Author Share #24 Posted August 20, 2010 You're right I found it a smooth operation with the manual focus dial, even though it's in an odd place. I need to have another look at it and explore the different focus settings.

Julian Thompson Posted August 23, 2010 Share #26 Posted August 23, 2010 Manual focus really works well on the X1 once you get used to it. I'm nailing the timing on all sorts of things now probably better than with my M9 and M7 ! Welcome, dear visitor! Really want one now! If you can resist then probably more prudent to hold out till photokina 2 weeks away??!! But as it is, the X1 is an incredible machine. I seldom leave home without it. prk60091 Posted September 7, 2010 Share #31 Posted September 7, 2010 Leica is not like apple and they generally do not refreh their line every year. Having said that, if you waited this long what's another couple of weeks.
unitedhowl Posted September 7, 2010 Author Share #32 Posted September 7, 2010 What date is the event again? What's the general vibe - do people think they'll release something new in the x series?

Really want one now! If they announce something like an X1, or a refresh, then you'll be able to actually get one in 9 months to a year, whereas you can get an X1 right now. GhostHunter Posted September 7, 2010 Share #35 Posted September 7, 2010 Hi Sorry to butt in but i am in the process of selling all my canon gear to simplify my set up and i really like the look of the X1 despite it's draw backs. Can i ask, Does it now come with Lightroom 3 & has there been a firmware update to combat the poor AF? It's been a while since looking at the X1 1st time round. Thanks

BB W Posted September 7, 2010 Share #38 Posted September 7, 2010 Lightroom is great - I'm brand new to it but am slowly learning my way around it. I had been using Aperture 3 until it suddenly became very odd for me since the last RAW update. I have found, for me, that LR has offered me better results. As for the AF, Andy, I really do not think it is bad at all. It seems fine to me. My only complaint is that I wish the focus lock and metering were not linked. If they could address that with a firmware update, it would be fantastic.
GhostHunter Posted September 8, 2010 Share #39 Posted September 8, 2010 Cheers BB I have been using Lightroom 2 for nearly 2 years and was going to get version 3 anyway so if i get the X1 then I'll not need to get lightroom 3 he he!!
