ddebruin Posted July 10, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, the other day my Digilux 2 simply stopped working. Both the LCD and view finder just went black and refused to create an image. Very odd indeed as the camera was working fine the day before and it wasn't knocked or dropped. Anyway i sent it off to ADEAL Australia who tell me they can't even look at it for 4 weeks and then may have to send it back to Germany!! Do you think this is a fair way to deal with a warranty claim on a high quality piece of kit like Leica?
Advertisement Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 Hi ddebruin, Take a look here warranty Digilux 2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pekem Posted July 10, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2006 I would be inclined to write directly to Leica in Germany and ask for their view on the service of their agent in Australia. You might find that the matter is expedited as a result.
Guest flatfour Posted July 10, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 10, 2006 I know this sounds silly but have you a.) checked the battery , and b.) taken the battery out and replaced it. The contacts need to be kept clean. Finally try a Panasonic dealer.
ddebruin Posted July 10, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted July 10, 2006 yes, i think a letter to Leica may be the answer. The Australian dealer is also the Samsung dealer and repairer, so I have the feeling that I'm waiting behind a mountain of Samsung repairs before they get to have a look at my camera! I couldn't imagine they would have that many Leica repairs. Other than the screens being black the camera seemed to operating fine, and in fact the battery indicator was full. I was able to access all menus etc, so I would suspect that the battery was OK (?)
brucek Posted July 11, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 11, 2006 I'm curious. How were you able to access the menus if the screens are black?
ddebruin Posted July 11, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted July 11, 2006 thats the mystery - the camera operated as if the lens cap was on (which it wasn't) ie all menus etc but no image ??

ddebruin Posted July 11, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted July 11, 2006 It does Stuart, everything is normal except there is no image on either the lcd or view finder. The image is written to the card and it's a black image.
stumac Posted July 11, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2006 Have you tried taking the battery out and leaving a couple of days before replacing it and trying again, sometimes this helps. Otherwise three posibilites come to mind, failed sensor, failed interconnection between boards, or I believe there is a shutter that blanks the sensor during data transfer, may be stuck closed. ddebruin Posted July 11, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted July 11, 2006 thanks Stuart, unfortunately I've already sent it off to wait behind all the Samsung repairs that need doing in Australia at the moment. We've just had a baby boy 3 weeks ago and now i don't have a camera:mad: - things always go wrong at the worst possible time.
stumac Posted July 11, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2006 Congratulations on your new arrival, is he your first? unfortunatly I cant help out with a camera being at the other end of aust. Last time I was out at Adeal they only had one tech for all repairs so I expect he is very busy. Other forum members do not use Adeal, they send their repairs direct to Solms Regards, Stuart
erl Posted July 11, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2006 My past experiences with Adeal have been very good, but the personnel have since changed and I think the company policy is a litle less accommodating. My apologies to them if I am wrong! Try speaking to them and explain your personal circumstances re. the new baby (congratulations) and that the camera is VERY important for obvious reasons. The baby will probably quadruple its age by the time the repaired camera is returned. A very reasonable solution would be for them to give you a loaner camera for the duration of the repair time. They have done this for me on several occasions. The secret (I believe) is to always be very polite despite making the urgency quite clear. It is only good PR for them to do this. Most likely, your camera will be sent back to the 'real' manufacturer (panasonic) as I don't believe Adeal do not have anyone who can sort anything of a highly technical electronic nature. What I am saying is, 'it will take time'. Good luck with it. Cheers, Erl
stumac Posted July 11, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 11, 2006 Hi Erl, Agreed, Adeal has done good work for me in the past, even lent me a new 50 sumicron R while they fitted a third cam to my old one. Catch up sometime when I am up in town, will ring. Regards, Stuart
etanguero Posted July 11, 2006 Share #14 Posted July 11, 2006 g'day! bad news, indeed. esp. so soon after you had the beauty! thats the mystery - the camera operated as if the lens cap was on (which it wasn't) ie all menus etc but no image ?? ... and ... It does Stuart, everything is normal except there is no image on either the lcd or view finder. The image is written to the card and it's a black image. ... reads to me like the shutter and/or diaphragma is not opening. neither for a preview, neither for a picture. I do not know how the shutter works on the Digilux 2 (I won't open mine fust for a look ).: is it a curtain-type shutter or is it a "Zentralverschluss" (sorry, I do not know the english term for this type: as far as I understand the working it's a diaphragma which totally closes before the expore, opens to the chosen diaphragma during the exposure, and then totally closes again). IMHO both could be blocked in a way or another. I'd guess both these problems could be either mechanically or electronically induced, depending on how the system works. waiting 4 weeks before they'd even look at it is absolutely frustrating. this underlines again: allways call ahead before sending anything in. please keep us updated! eT
ddebruin Posted July 12, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted July 12, 2006 thanks for all your congratualtions. ADEAL have been friendly and helpful on the phone and they have bumped my job ahead of a bunch of others. Unfortunately the way they are talking it seems that the camera is off for an overseas trip - lucky camera! I did ring ahead prior to sending the camera to them and they said "...send the camera to us because our technicians are trained Leica experts and regulary travel to Germany for training"! It seems something always ends up in Germany, either the technician or the camera. Hey - maybe the technician could hand carry the camera over to Germany for me and learn how to repair it when he's there?! I will let you know how it all pans out. ddebruin Posted July 17, 2006 Author Share #16 Posted July 17, 2006 well ADEAL came through and gave me a new camera, or 'refurbished' i think is the term they used - either way it looks like brand new. I got it this morning and everything is good - 10 out of 10 to ADEAL. I can now continue to take snaps hundreds of snaps of the new guy.
