nyckylim Posted August 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all, I've been using a cheap Sony tripod with my old canon 350d 18-75mm lens and also with the new x1 for the past 5 years and all has been great. Especially with the size of the X1 being so light and compact, I have taken some shots with the tripod with no problem at all. Only problem is that I need a ball head instead of turning so many levers just to compose my image. Now, the tripod has finally decided to die on me and the joint connecting the legs have broke. Therefore, I hope to get some honest opinions from some of the members here whether do I need to get those good tripods like manfrotto or gitzo for the X1 since its so light. And what are the benefits of those tripods as compared to those cheap ones. Do you think i can get a decent tripod for the X1 under $100 ? With Regards Nycky

Dan States Posted August 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2010 For a camera the size of the x1 it's no problem. I've been using a Velbon Ultra Max is I bought in Japan a few years back for $80 and it's great as long as your camera is small. It has a ball head and had been very reliable. I'm sure others will have great suggestions as well. Best wishes Dan
nyckylim Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 5, 2010 Any other suggestions on which tripods you're using with your x1?
NZDavid Posted August 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2010 Leitz tabletop, Cullmann mini, Manfrotto digi. A sturdy ballhead is the thing. Leitz and Cullmann are excellent and a decent size, Manfrotto smaller and more fragile. But they are also shorter, so depends on the height you need. nyckylim Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 5, 2010 I'm looking for something around shoulder level height. I would definitely love carbon fibre. ok. I know that i'm going to be contradicting my topic, but i have decided to go with the Manfrotto 732CY M-Y Carbon Fibre Tripod. Any other recommendations ? I've decided to spend a little more so that i can share its usage with my DSLR. Cheers Nycky
pgk Posted August 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2010 There are only two sorts of tripod - those which hold the camera still and those that don't - I'm not sure how much price is relevant but personally I have used Gitzo for years because they work well for me - not cheap though. Manfrotto own Gitzo and have a good reputation. I would suggest that if at all possible you try before you buy though.
peter_n Posted August 6, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A light Gitzo and a Markins Q3T ballhead. You'll never need another support rig.
nyckylim Posted August 7, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted August 7, 2010 I went for the Manfrotto 190CXPro3 with the 496RC2. Looking good so far. I was thinking of the Markins Q3T too. But was too pricy. Haha. Thanks BTW.
tobey bilek Posted August 8, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 8, 2010 Buy a Leica ball head for your pod. If the pics are not sharp, then a Gitzo is in order and still use same head. Cheap pods are generally a pain and not sturdy and will not operate nicely. $100 does not get you much.
