suden Posted August 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking for a nice strap for my M9 to wear cross body comfortably. The Black Rapid strap looks comfortable but too bulky for my tastes (great for DSLR, but a bit much for M9 IMHO) and the other ones such as the Strap offered by Leicagoodies looks like it might not be the most comfortable set-up...especially when carrying my M9 and Noct combo for a day. I am wondering about the Leica Wide Strap 14455? Anybody have this and wear it cross body? Thanks for any and all input!

chris_tribble Posted August 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2010 Use the original. Works fine for a lot of us...
suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 4, 2010 I have been using the original...but I would like something different and possibly a bit more comfortable.
ldhrads Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 4, 2010 I've been using the "hook" and "strap" from Leicagoodies.com for a couple of years. It's a great way to carry and handle the camera. Especially nice if you use a thumbsup as well, but certainly great without.
suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 4, 2010 I have the Thumbs Up...can't imagine my M9 without it! How about the comfort factor of the hook and strap? Does it tend to cut into your shoulder after a while? And is there any possibility of scratching the camera with the hook attached? I might reconsider it... ianspector Posted August 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 4, 2010 I really like the original strap for around the neck and off one shoulder. It is not really set up for across the chest. I use a Leicagoodies strap and hook on my MP that I wear across the chest (with the Noctilux) and the M9 with the Leica strap around my neck. I am considering two Strap and Hooks however. There is no real risk of scratching from the hook but I am always conscious of the camera swinging around and being lens first into my leg. My Crons have stiff lens hoods but the Noct hood slides easily and will have to rely on its filter for protection. None of these straps are quite long enough for me. I would happily pay extra for a couple of extra long Straps. I also bought the Black Rapid but that just looks silly with an M body on it. suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted August 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ian, That was my conclusion about the Black Rapid strap as well...do you know off-hand how long the strap measures to? The strap that comes with the M9 measures to around 46" at it's longest. I recently took delivery of the Domke gripper strap and I really like it except that it's not long enough...in fact, shorter than the factory strap but I am considering keeping it as an alternative anyway as it's a nice, simple strap and a very good price...besides, I have to pay shipping to send it back and in the end I might get $10.00 credited back...LOL...not really worth it-it's a real bargain at $15.95! ianspector Posted August 4, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 4, 2010 I have just measured mine, 56" so it is a great length but my M9 swings wildly on it so it has never been used. Ian
suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks, Ian...that would definitely be long enough...perhaps too long for the M9+Noctilux combo.
mboerma Posted August 4, 2010 Share #10 Posted August 4, 2010 Maybe this is something to look at? I bought one but never used it for som reason. On request the length can be adjusted: Y Strap
suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted August 4, 2010 I looked at the Y Strap as well...still wondering if these types of straps are comfortable after a day's shooting, though. I do like the fact that you can adjust the length of this one. Anybody have the ultra wide Leica strap and wear it cross body? I am probably most curious about this one as it looks comfortable, albeit pricey.
ianspector Posted August 4, 2010 Share #12 Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks, Ian...that would definitely be long enough...perhaps too long for the M9+Noctilux combo. The Black Rapid is really easy to adjust longer and shorter plus it has the bumper to stop the camera at the right position. I have my Noct on the M9 at the moment so I will fix it to the Black Rapid and see how it feels. And my iPhone fits in the pocket on the strap. ldhrads Posted August 4, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 4, 2010 I actually have both the Leicagoodies strap and the Ystrap. I it's the same setup, but the Ystrap is adjustable. While I'm not tall, I am a bit round and I like the Ystrap better because of the adjustability. I also like it better because with the adjustment I can wear it over a jacket, or under. I just got back from a week in SF with the M9 and Noctilux. It does swing a little, but without a doubt it was definitely comfortable, With any other lens, it's like the camera isn't there, when I had my 35cron mounted it was like nothing. It's also very subtle as far as "Wow I've got an Expensive Camera". The ability to grip the camera and swing it up into position is great. I still use the Leicagoodies snap with the Ystrap. To me this is the best way to carry the rig.
suden Posted August 4, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks for the comparative notes, Idhrads...very helpful! Ian, I appreciate your checking into the combo with the Black Rapid strap as well...my only hesitation is that I feel it's a bit bulky and a little overkill for a rangefinder, but no doubt probably the most comfortable of the sling type straps out there. Also, it does concern me about the way it attaches to the camera a little.
peter_n Posted August 4, 2010 Share #15 Posted August 4, 2010 I recently took delivery of the Domke gripper strap and I really like it except that it's not long enough...in fact, shorter than the factory strap but I am considering keeping it as an alternative anyway as it's a nice, simple strap and a very good price...I too am a Domke Gripper fan and needed two very long straps for my two M bodies. My solution was to use thin Domke bag straps. I bought a set of 1.5" swivel hooks on eBay and had a local shoe repairer stitch the straps into them. Now I have two straps that are very flexible, ranging from my upper chest to bandolier-style across the body and on my hip below the hip bone. ldhrads Posted August 4, 2010 Share #16 Posted August 4, 2010 I just watched the videos for the BlackRapid strap. The strap is nice, with the shoulder pad, would work great for an SLR Here's my concern for the M camera, I just wouldn't feel comfortable having the camera hang upside down screwed into the baseplate. I think that eventually the baseplate would do some flexing and might pop off of the camera leaving your M and Lens on the ground!!!
tdtaylor Posted August 5, 2010 Share #17 Posted August 5, 2010 I have had the Black Rapid for years, and it is fabulous. Even comfortable for an hour with the Nikon 200VR and D700 (connected to the lens). Needless to say, anything lighter is great all day, and it is incredibly convenient, comfortable and FAST. But I just can't see putting my M9 on it. If only BlackRapid made a slim model. The Y-strap does look intriguing, since it is adjustable. Never realized it was adjustable. Jeff S Posted August 5, 2010 Share #18 Posted August 5, 2010 Suden, try the forum search box and enter words like 'leica wide strap,' 'best strap,' etc. and you will get many other threads on your questions, with even more options. Personally, I agree with Chris and have used original straps for decades, on many Ms, with zero problems. Jeff
suden Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #19 Posted August 5, 2010 I did a search on the wide strap, but I didn't find anything that addressed wearing it cross body style. It looks like it would be pretty ideal for that with the combination of leather and width, but I don't know if it would be long enough. I don't mind the standard Leica strap, but I would like something a little more diverse, comfortable and, dare I say, stylish!
menos I M6 Posted August 5, 2010 Share #20 Posted August 5, 2010 I had a strap mess for a long time, liking very worn standard Nikon straps a lot for the good width and a very soft touch. I experimented with a few different straps and always ended with the original Leica strap with plastic pad removed. I switch straps, adjust length, switch to self made wrist straps - all depending, what I am doing. All this changing straps and adjusting regularly forbids any kind of "keyring assembly" and alike on my bodies - the strap lugs would have been worn through by now and I would loose my nerve on changing straps with key rings (seriously the worst solution for any strap there is). I love the Leica quick connectors - a strap is changed in less than a minute. Usually, I carry two bodies these days with strap adjusted to the shortest length - this works best for holding one body in my right hand, while walking (I don't wrap straps around my wrist, but hold both sides of the strap in my right hand - never catches a strap in front of the lens this way). Heavy lenses (tele, 50 Noct) go into the bag instead of "over the shoulder, when another body is used. They are just not comfortable over a shoulder (and too expensive, when slipping as well). I like the feel of the original Leica straps, when they wear in a bit - they get similarly soft as the Nikon straps and completely loose this "plastic" feel, when new, which might turn some people off (washing the strap, when bought new, helps a bit too).
