To the OP, where are you going? Can you practice near your place? 50 is great for landscapes. The framelines require careful composition, not a bad thing at all. Here's one with the 50 'cron.

I used to do some yearly backpacking up north, above the Arctic Circle. Lots of wide expanses -- somewhat like the Scottish Highlands with reindeer instead of sheep, and permanent snow on the mountaintops.

During several trips, I carried just one camera with a standard lens. Later, I used a Olympus OM SLR with a standard (50mm) lens, a lightweight 135 and occasionally a 24mm. I found that the 50mm lens accounted for over ninety percent of all the shots. During my last expeditions I carried a Leica M6TTL with 50 and 90mm lenses, or even a Rollei 35 with its fixed 40mm lens.

Conclusion: The 50mm focal length is the best length there is for landscapes! Even though I am very much a 35mm man.

I'm going to New York, but I travel all the time as part of my job. With my other gadgets and the fact I only ever take a carry-on bag I need to travel as light as possible, despite the limitations.

Thanks for all the comments...
