i havent seen one in the flesh (so to speak) and the only photo i have seen is with it closed.

can anyone who has it or seen it tell me - is it solely a "transport case" or can the camera be operated while in the case?

Thanks in advance

It is a rather confusing name as the word "transport" carries a number of meanings in English.

Here we have a camera case pure and simple.

Leica make a similar case for the DLux4 but don't use the word Transport.

Think of it a small leather box which can be attached to a belt or hung from a strap.

It is rather tight and it's better not to use a lens cap with it as that tends to come off every time you open the case. The camera is removed for taking shots and really needs a wrist strap for security.

Personally I feel that this case is too close fitting and needs to be enlarged slightly to accommodate the opening movement against the lens.Owners of the case will know what I mean. My copy now lies unused...score 7/10

Hey Laza I think you said you are in Chicago?

I found that none of the X1 bags were perfect- they all had serious deficiencies. There is a shop on the northside by you called Turley Road. They have a series of Carga bags by a cool Argentinian designer (CARGA). I use the 04 bag for my X1. I have custom adapted it for some pretty cool features- I added felt padding inside to give it a perfect fit while leaving the dials with over an inch of headroom, and customized compartments for a grotto goatshair extendable brush, an extra battery, lens cloth, tripod, and sd card. Plus, the designer sent me a cool extra pocket I put on the strap - like a cell phone case that is on the strap by your opposite shoulder- for the lens cap so I never lose it and it's always easily accessible. Plus it doesn't look like a camera bag or have a big "leica" target on it.

I'd be happy to show you the bag and it'd be cool to meet another X1 owner. I will also have the thumbs up tomorrow or Thursday and already have the voigt viewfinder if you wanted to check those out. PM me if interested and it wouldn't be hard to meet up. I live next to the Aqua building / Aon Building / Grant Park.

Hi, I don't know exactly which case you mean but the 18709 case (Amazon.com: Leica 18709 X1 Camera Case: Camera & Photo) is beautiful, nice leather. Because I now have a ready case (a Panasonic and modified...) I nearly use it.

It's not too small for the camera, at least in the beginning I would say yes, but after a few weeks it fits nice. You need to get the camera out a bit careful otherwise you could have the problem the flash pops out but I don't have a problem with that.

I bought an alternative at Heathrow for my trip to Switzerland recently, one from the Lowepro range. Mine is Apex 100 AW (All-weather). It was very reasonably priced (a little over £20) but is rather bigger than the Traveller case. However, it will fit on a belt, or slung over the shoulder, and it will carry my X1 with hand-grip and viewfinder fitted, which I needed. There is also room for a spare battery and SD cards. It is well padded with a reinforced base and has the pull-out rain-protective cover.

I Love to carry the X1 in a belt pouch, and have used lowepro (too big), lens case (too round and jutting out too much) and while shopping in bangkok, I found a bag which I believe to be the best so far. The size is almost exact (I do not use the viewfinder but there appears to be ample room above the camera once I put the X1 in it). it comes in 3 colors, olive green, black but I bought the funky camo one :D. Brand is "TAD gear" supposedly made in the USA (what it says in the bag) but was a little pricey.

I think de brown leather Leica case is simply excellent. It fits the camera very well and has good padding to really protect the X1. The 'hard' leather dome for the lens is more than protective enough to forget about the stupid lens hood. Big plus!

You can use the neck/shoulder strap (that doesn't slide off your shoulder for a change...), carry it on your belt or use a wrist strap only. Very versatile.

IMO it looks really Leica retro cool and draws more (positive) attention than I expected. Being leather, it looks better with use contrary to non leather cases. Really good value!

The only thing I'd trade it for is a custom full leather case from Luigi coming available this autumn.

Richard.

i have that light grey leica full leather case, its ok i think, a bit tight and the LCD screen leaves some marks to the leather. I dont like the handgrip and this case is probably designed for use with the hand grip installed, otherwise there is always a gap on the bottom of the case, so the X1 never touches the bottom of the case, this space is reserved for the optional hand grip and i dont like this, maybe i buy the luigi full case instead

@Danielsan

The grey leather bag is the 'Ever Ready Case' and indeed designed to use with the grip installed.

I looked at it too but I didn't really liked the fit and ergos' and that you have to fit the grip too...

Richard
