White Balance Card Question

How do you find the Expodisc works for you? Have you also tried the WhiBal card?

It's very quick with M9 to go into menu and scroll down to 'manual', slip disc over lens with camera near subject and press shutter. I tried AWB with a few things on a work surface under a window, looking towards garden, and then repeated this with Expodisc. The colours of objects were far closer to true with the Expodisc setting. You need one with a diameter larger than any lens you have (eg to suit E46 rather than E39) – exact size is not important. I bought the 58mm.

Just feel happier than fiddling with pieces of card!

A common perception, but what it gives is a reliable consistent datum on importation into LR.. But let's not get too hung up about methodology. There are several ways of achieving an accurate result. I am always happier when I use either my WhiBal or ColorChecker. Using the latter is easier when shooting a calibrated patch because it is easier to fill the frame with a neutral color. The small WhiBal card is much smaller and better used as originally intended.

I use a whibal card and have the subject hold it everytime I change the lighting.

Then, while processing in C1, I use this part of the picture for white balance, "copy" the setting, and "paste" that setting to the group of pix that follow this light-change record.

It really makes life easy!

I got the book "Leica M9" by David Taylor ( ISBN 9781907708060 ) out of curiosity and for its jump-start intro to Lightroom.

It contains some pocket data cards, including a white-balance card, and a 18% grey card.

The benefit of the whibal card is that they ensure that the paper reflects the same amount of each of the 3 colors. To do this, they inspect all the paper that will be used in the cards, beforehand.

I use the 3x5 version and it fits in the silly and ugly little bag I put the camera in (this bag says "there is nothing worth stealing here").

Regards,
