New 35 Lux and filters...

Delighted in my new 35 lux, but i can't get my heliopan ND filter on at the same time as the hood - the diameter of the filter is greater than the internal diameter of the circular part of the hood. It works fine without the hood. Also if I put the filter on and then try to put the hood on, the hood won't fit over the filter either.

Does any other make of filter have a slightly narrower diameter and fit inside the hood?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I wonder though whether "designed to fit" is the same as fitting - i've just found a 46mm B+W UV filter, it seems to be exactly the same diameter as the end of the lens, yet with it placed on the lens the hood won't pass over it. This can only be due to a very very slightly wider diameter, it is not perceptible to the mere human eye.

I think it is not actually designed to fit together with a filter, I think there is a taper to the inside of the hood.

Has anyone got this or a similar design of hood to work with a filter?

On the new 35mm summilux the hood fits over my Leica UV filter but not the B+W. The B+W is very slightly larger in diameter. Use the Leica brand for use with the hood.

Thanks... I'm off to buy a small file to take a fraction of a mm off the filter's diameter. Leica don't seem to make an ND filter.

To overcome such a problem in the past I've swapped the glass between a B+W filter and a Leica one. The Leica glasses are held in by a split spring ring and are easy to remove. The B+W ones aren't so easy, there's a threaded ring that holds the glass and it doesn't have any means to get a purchase to unscrew it. You either have to use a rubber bung or drill a small hole/s in the ring to get a purchase or build up a layer of adhesive on the ring until it's higher than the filter rim. You can then press the filter with adhesive against a sheet of glass and unscrew the ring. Since you don't need to keep the B+W mount an alternative is to file a slot in the side of the mount and lever it open to release the glass.

Leica do of course offer 46mm filters that fit -- because the hood is designed to fit them.

I have the same problem, but with an Elmarit 28 and a Leica UV/IR 39mm filter. I need an UV only filter for my Leica M3 and I guess Leica doesn`t make it anymore. B&W UV`s may be suitable for been used with the Elmarit sunshade?

If you are looking for a 39mm UVa Leica filter there shouldn't be a problem obtaining one. They are still in the current catalog E39 black 13131 and E39 Silver 13132. They are also being advertised by dealers in the UK.

Many thanks, Bob. Yesterday I bought one used but in very good condition from a dealer here, in Buenos Aires. When I bought my Elmarit in Germany, some weeks ago, I didn`t know that the UV/IR filter wasn`t suitable for color in the Leica M, now, thanks to the Forum, I know that. Really, the Forum is an excellent place for learning about Leica!
