archi4 Posted July 20, 2010 Share #21 Posted July 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The problem can be caused by a corrupted file. Unfortunately, Leica does not indicate what the correct size of the file should be (5,016,366 bytes) when unzipped. Panasonic does and you are urged to check it. I usually download the file a number of times, and if there are no discrepancies assume it is ok. Maurice
Advertisement Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Hi archi4, Take a look here Cannot fire shutter or use display after firmware update. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bocaburger Posted July 21, 2010 Share #22 Posted July 21, 2010 Crap. I was going to wait a couple weeks before updating, to see if there were any new bugs, but then I said, "Naaaah, Leica only made one little change in it, there can't be any harm in updating right away." UPDATE: went back and took a bunch of shots with my M8, no lockups or shutdowns. Everything copacetic as they say. BTW I keep a copy of the firmware on an old 64MB Leica SD card (came with my DLUX2 I think) with the lock tab engaged (write protected) in my bag, just in case I ever would need to reload the firmware while out and about. simanlaci Posted July 23, 2010 Share #23 Posted July 23, 2010 Hi All, New to this forum. New to Leica. I just had my first used M8 yesterday. I updated the firmware, I shot a hundred shots with no problem, than this morning I switched it on to "C" mode, shot a few images, and now I have the same problem, it is toasted. Any guess? What to do now? I tried to re-install the firmware without the display, but no sucess, I switched it off (battery off) for a time, no success. Help! Please! Nicoleica Posted July 23, 2010 Share #24 Posted July 23, 2010 Hi Laszlo, Can you describe in a bit more detail exactly what functions, and what doesn't? Did you get any error messages from the camera? Any strange sounds etc.? This is so that we can get a better idea as to what the problem may be. But first of all. You say that the camera was fine for quite a few shots after the firmware upgrade, but stopped the next day. Is your battery fully charged? Have you tried turning the camera off, removing the battery, turn the camera back on again, waiting while you recharge the battery, turn the camera off, and then re-inserting the battery? This often cures mystery ailments. (It's the Leica equivalent of kicking something to make it work.) Good luck.
simanlaci Posted July 23, 2010 Share #25 Posted July 23, 2010 Hi Nicoleica, Thank for the quick reply. Well, there was no error message, or any other suspicious thing. I updated the firmware, no error, no sound. I used it in "S" mode for several shots, no problem. This morning I shot a few in "S", than I switched it to "C" to try this mode as well, I hold the shutter button, and after a few image, it stopped, and from that point, there in no display, and no reaction for the shutter or any other button. If I switch it on with the lid open, I hear a beep, and any time I press the shutter the red led is flashing (once). Sometimes, when I press several times the shutter for a sec. or so the display switches on but than it is black again. Not even the small battery display working. I tried to take the battery off, wait for a half hour but nothing. I am sure the battery is full, at least it was shown as full a few minute before it went dead. Thanks for the help! Nicoleica Posted July 23, 2010 Share #26 Posted July 23, 2010 Hi Laszlo, It's quite normal for the camera to stop after several exposures in 'C' mode, as the buffer becomes full, and you have to wait while it writes to your SD card. Also, trying to use the camera without the base (I guess this is what you mean by 'the lid'. ) closed and locked should fail, as there is a little switch in the base to detect that it's shut properly. It may be that you have confused your camera's computer here, and I would suggest that you try the 'reset' process that I mentioned earlier. The longer that you can leave the camera switched on with no battery the better, as the little internal battery can take a while to run down if it's fully charged. (Overnight or 24 hours is often suggested.) But if your camera hasn't been used for a while, this time could be reduced as the internal battery may not be fully charged yet. Hope this helps. simanlaci Posted July 23, 2010 Share #27 Posted July 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, base, not lid.. Thanks for the info. So, I take the battery out, and let's see what is happening. I was waiting after the shots, to write them down to the card, but after 10 min. there was still no reaction. Fingers crossed. I will let you know...
Nicoleica Posted July 23, 2010 Share #28 Posted July 23, 2010 Thanks. Oh yes, one more thing. Try using a different SD card if possible. There's a small chance that it could have become corrupted, and so using a different one will take that out of the equation.
simanlaci Posted July 23, 2010 Share #29 Posted July 23, 2010 Well, I charged the battery, and I put it back after it was off for 5-6 hours. Well now it is working. Yeah! But the bug was really strange.. I hope it was one time only.. Thank you very much for the really lot of help! It was a very scary thing on my 2nd "Leica" day.
