My beloved X1 momentarily crapped out on me over the weekend. Was on a walk shooting, and lifted the camera to get a candid shot. Lens came out, and then...bam...the whole thing dead as a doorknob. Lens would not retract, display and menu dead. Turned it on off and all on settings, nothing.

Only when I removed the battery and put it back in did it start again, and has not happened since. It was a full bar battery and read as such once the thing came back to life.

Any idea on why that may have happened? Close to giving it the benefit of the doubt seeing most gadgets and computers will crap out once and a while, and need to be "rebooted"... If it happens again, though.......I will want a new one.

As usual, these temperamental beasts misbehave, and I am still hopelessly attached ;)

I'd just email Leica USA to see what they say. If it's a software glitch it will be addressed in a future update; if it's more serious (which I doubt) they'll take good care of it. It's not unusual for electronics to occasionally behave this way with early firmware versions.

Keeping a careful eye on it. My (awesome) dealer will make it right if happens again and/or I want to exchange at any time.

I have been a photographer for 21 years and have unfortunately had this problem with film and digital cameras. Usually it is nothing more than a build up of static electricity that is easily remedied by removing the battery, waiting a few seconds, and then putting it back in. Nine times out of ten it will do the trick. I know a lot of you probably know this already, but I'm sure there are some people that do not.

Same with me as well this week while on holiday. took the battery out and put it straight back in and all is fine. I had the handgrip attached so it was not down to a loose battery door, must be just a computer thing.
