Building new LR3 and CS5 library

Hi everyone,

After reading a lot of positive stuff about LR3 and CS5 I decided to bite the bullit and buy 'm both.

I've been using A3 but unfortunately I find it unusable for serious post work. My MacPro has 16 Gb RAM but still everytime I use dodge and burn here, apply some skin softening and sharpening there etc. A3 either freezes or becomes painfully slow.

So now that I'm going to be in the 'Adobe camp' I thought I might just as well make a fresh start with building a new library. At the moment I produce files with Sony a900, NEX 5, D Lux 2 and scans from MP and M7 (tiffs).

It would be very helpful if you could point me in the right direction regarding the new library build-up. Should I convert to DNG (of course having the originals safely backed up)

How does one keep track of all the changes in the DNG's when doing a back up of library? All the files will have unchanged names...

Any help is much appreciated.

Peter

Hi Peter,

In another post, I posted the way I did when I move from A3 to LR. Assuming your master raw files (in my case NEF from my Nikon and DNG from my M9) were imported directly into A3 library (aplibrary), then you should be able to retrieve it (or move it) out from the aplibrary. Just right click on that file, and show content. Or like what I did, I use A3 to move the masters out from the library. Unfortunately, all post processing done in A3 cannot be moved to an outside folder (unless you export the version). Both A3, LR and iPhoto keeps the changes post-processing in a separate proprietary file (neither made changes directly to the raw NEF or DNG files.

I am not an expert in this, other members may have a better solution.

I experience the same issue as you did, A3 for me is just too slow, could be either my library is too large, or the software is still too buggy.

Regards.
