X1 Bottleneck ?

Hi All,

After some time with my X1, i'm getting to like it even more than before.

However, I'm thinking of getting a Sandisk Extreme III 30mb/s SD Card.

I am wondering, would there be a difference in camera writing speed ? Or would the speed be bottlenecked by the X1 ?

I'm currently using the Sandisk Ultra which is capped at 15mb/s. Would there be any benefits of switching to the SanDisk Extreme ?

Thanks

Nycky

Great question. I was wondering the same thing myself. I have a extreme two. But because I have not yet received my x1 nor don't have a extreme 2. I can't help. Hopefully someone else can.

I'm not sure? though I think the on board processor of the X1 max's out at the current rght speed on SD Ultra II cards, "so the only thing I think? will be faster is the transfer speed of the files from a card reader to the computer" . I think?

I just think that you are all ready writing nfo at max speed with your current card, so don't waste your time unless your going into very Cold, Hot and very humid climates and or ruff rough use of camera like it hang around your side and banging the side of Elcapitans verticle granite monolith, with your X1;)

There are other factors that will make the difference. I've had more than a hundred different flash cards in 15 years, and they're unpredictable. The X1 is bottlenecked for sure, in that it won't write 30 mb/s or even 15. But if the 30 writes faster than the 15, even slightly faster, it would not likely be because of the specification. I would check some reviews, comparing different brands.

I understand that the 30mb/s would definitely transfer faster to the computer than the 15mb/s.

My question is, will X1 be able to write at the speed of Extreme III or it will be just a waste of money to get Extreme III?

Thank you.

P.S: Thanks to those who replied. :)

Very likely a waste of money. And further, the 30 mb/s will not necessarily write faster than the 15 in the real world. It may at first, then not later. It may be faster with some devices, and slower with others. There are many factors, and only the user reviews (not Web magazine reviews) will tell the story, but you'll have to check a lot of those to filter out the ones that aren't trustworthy.

I'd agree with that - it's a shame we can't get this guy to test an x1 - they're a great resource on this in the dslr world.

Rob Galbraith DPI: Canon EOS 5D Mark II - don't mind the link title, the page is about card write speeds.

Because the buffer is so small in the x1, i'm doubtful write time will change much with the latest and greatest.. you're only ever writing max 6 shots to the card from the buffer (probably more like 3).

I was given a 16gb transcend hc class 6 - they run < $50 and I can barely see a difference (maybe none) with that and my 4gb class 4 card. I doubt highly there would be ANY benefit to a class 8 or similar. Class 6 is fast enough for HD video fwiw.

does anyone know if there are any reviewers out there that tested the speed of SD cards ?

See the post direcly above yours, they are the most robust testing I have found - the problem is, they don't test on the x1, and without pairing it with a camera, the test is pointless.

Class 6 will exceed what the camera can do imho, going faster is a waste of money.

If you just want to find out what the fastest card on the market is, hit the link i posted, choose a camera, inspect results.
