My thoughts on the M9 and other cameras

These discussion are always a bit comical to me. They're really a debate over which criteria (values) matter. The strengths of all these cameras are well know. I've always thought that the Leica advantage was worth about 20% for the extra cost. But what a difference, especially now with the M9. But I can easily understand why someone would not want to pay out $7000 plus $3000 for a lens to get started with the M9. I already own the lenses and their worth much more now than I paid for them. But what's so comical is why someone--anyone--wouldn't just buy the Olympus camera or the new Panasonic/Leica L20 (or so) for $300 to $600 and just use it with the M9. $300/$7000 is obviously a drop in the bucket and you get to zoom from 25-300mm. Anyone who can afford a Leica M9 can afford a complementary advanced P&S camera to carry along as well.

At the end of the day it's common sense that the Leica M9 might not be right for everybody for every situation.

I find the M9 a perfect traveling companion when I compare size, quality and versatility for what I need with just a 3 lens configuration. Manual focus works for me. I always bring along a Canon G11 P&S for convenience & backup too.

Now other folks might prefer much more automation, AF, built in flash, even smaller footprint etc. No problem - have at it with your EP-2's/GF-1's etc & enjoy. :)

When I go on a proper photo trek I have the full DSLR ensemble with me. I love the M9 but it can't compete with my D3s or even D3x in practical wildlife shooting at 400-600mm in low light ...
