leicapages Posted July 13, 2006 Share #21 Posted July 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, if Imacon is dragging its feet, I feel that this is definitely not the moment to buy a DMR. Who knows what kind of support to expect in the future? A hardware piece like that one needs adequate software support, over years...
Advertisement Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Hi leicapages, Take a look here Version 1.3 speculation for the DMR. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ebwilson Posted July 13, 2006 Share #22 Posted July 13, 2006 I don't own a DMR, so I don't have a dog in this fight. The viability of Leica, however, is very important to me. I'm wondering, though, what possible value or advantage Imacon could see in dragging Leica and it's customers through a protracted hell. Even though there has been an acquisition, there is still no incentive to sabotage the product or the relationship. Imacon may have decided there is no money to be made from this alliance, but better to exit gracefully than to kill it's own reputation by publicly hurting one of the all time classic brand names. That is illogical and bad business. It just doesn't seem like a likely scenario. 'Hope I'm right! I'm surmising the issue goes more to competence than to some kind of conspiracy. Some problems just aren't subject to quick and/or easy fixes.
ptomsu Posted July 13, 2006 Share #23 Posted July 13, 2006 I had a wild thought about why this is taking leica so long to come out with version 1.3. as you all know 1.2 came out and was very buggy from Imacon and it has been months since they fixed it . First question is why so long, second thought is maybe it may not come from Imacon. Hmmmm Long pause of thought here. Okay this is a wild one but what if . Leica said screw them we will just have our new vendor for the M8 build a new firmware for the DMR. That way we can share the same raw procesing software for both bodies and slightly different firmware for each system to support the M and R within there systems. We all have speculated that Jenoptiks is the company for the M8 and they do have nice software for there MF digital Backs today, so this would give them a chance to increase there software package and support Leica system wide with there firmware. Is this a crazy thought or what. But it actually makes really good sense to do this from leica's point of view. Thoughts Then to add more fuel to this , someone said on this very board that we will see version 1.3 in October . Now is this not the same exact time the M8 hits the streets. Hmmm, Another very long pause of thought. The answer is pretty obvious - they are busy to finalize the MD and maybe a Leica version of the L1. They expect much more sales from these 2 camera ranges than from the DMR in the next future. So DMR firmware has to wait :-(( This is what happens if you trust a small nearly bankrupt company. But hopefully they will make it, otherwise we can communicate in a Leica Historical Forum :-(
