Inviting ‘must-see’ suggestions for photogenic villages and other subjects within rail-reach of Wengen later this week. (22-29 June). I shall be using my M8 and X1 cameras and will be accompanied by my wife who is limited to short walks pending probable orthopaedic surgery.

Ideas from Switzerland-based members, or neighbouring countries, would be very welcome. Thank you.

Its been a few years, but below Wengen is a nice valley. Then there is another village, I think it is named Grimwald. There were a bunch of hang gliders launching from the Grimwald area. As I recall, we got up to Grimwald by cable car, so that could work out for your spouse. The hang glider landings were pretty interesting so shooting from the valley is a good option. Also, in that valley is a famous set of waterfalls that everyone goes to. You might get some photos there, but take a shower cap for your camera--its wet and slippery in the caves. I could see the falls as being tough on your spouse's legs/knees.

I assume because you are in Wengen that you are going to the "Top of Europe--the Young Frau." You will get lots of great photos up there and there are nice tourist facilities so your spouse can enjoy herself and the view without walking a lot while you go out and walk on the glaciers. Good people candids.

If you have the time, I would highly recommend Bern. A great and well preserved medieval city. We spent three days there and then went to Wengen. I don't recall the distance, but I think you would want to spend the night if you went so that might not be in the cards.

Have fun

Sanyasi, thank you for your helpful and considerate advice. We are booked for seven nights in Wengen, with a small group, so I wouldn't choose to stay elsewhere overnight. But Bern does sound interesting.

I visited Wengen last winter (January 2010)and found it to be a wonderful and beautiful town. My brother Reverend Ronald Furst lives there and has a church in the city. The ancient wall surrounds the town and it is very well preserved. I found it a photo wonder. Enjoy the visit and post pictures when you return. We also visited the surrounding areas but I found that Wengen is special in itself. Sincerely, George

George, thank you. I find your comments really valuable. I had no idea Wengen was so large a community. There is always a risk that one overlooks local scenes when confronted with such a beautiful country.
