External Viewfinder on M6

I have an external 5cm viewfinder on my M6 and in checking the framing against the 50mm framelines in the camera's viewfinder, they are not as close as I would expect them to be. The external viewfinder framing seems to be noticeably "higher" and a bit wider than the camera's. So, which is closer to the actual framing as seen by the film?

The internal framelines are calculated for a mounted slide (23x35mm).

Rangefinder internal frames and external viewfinders are not precision framing devices.

You should be able to make a simple test for your camera/viewfinder that will answer your question better than any information from elsewhere.-Dick

Well, the answer is: It will depend on subject distance.

The internal framelines are calculated to show what the camera will record if the lens is set to its minimum focusing distance, i.e. 0.7m. Field of view gets bigger when setting the lens to infinity, so the internal framelines are a bit conservative when you shoot distant objects, i.e. the camera will record more than what is shown within the framelines.

The framelines of the old external Leitz viewfinders, however, were calculated to show the field of view of the respective lens set to infinity (they usually have one or more dotted lines for near focus).
