jphoto Posted December 30, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi. Are standard filters ok for a 25mm Zeiss Biogon, or should I try to find a slim version/use bigger diameter filters with a step up ring to avoid vignetting? I'm planning to get some B+W filters and the 46mm thread is not a on the shelf size at the local retailers, so I can't go out and make a test shot before ordering. Advertisement Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Hi jphoto, Take a look here Will standard thickness filters cause vignetting on a 25mm Biogon?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
brunom Posted December 31, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2006 Jouko Why not ask the shop for their advice, and then if it's wrong they will have to get the correct type ? Do Zeiss make filters for this lens? Bruno
dkCambridgeshire Posted January 1, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 1, 2007 If a normal thickness filter does cause vignetting it is fairly easy to convert it to a slim filter by removing the circlip holding the filter glass and then removing the glass thus leaving just the mount. The mount can be 'slimmed' by rubbing it on a piece of medium and then fine grade abrasive papers ... after a few minutes' rubbing the front of the mount can be reduced to 'zero' leaving just the rear of the mount into which the filter glass can be reinserted and circlipped. The resultant shiny front part of the mount can be blackened using Staedtler permanent black marking pen. This technique is also useful for creating slim filters for use with the 50/1.4 'lux M lens ... ie filters over which the lens hood will fit ... it will not fit securely over normal thickness filters. peter_n Posted January 1, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 1, 2007 I don't have a 25ZM - 46mm filter thread, but I've used standard filters with no vignetting on a 21/2.8 Kobalux (58mm filters) and 24/2.8 Leica (55mm filters). I have not read of any vignetting issues with the 25 over on RFF where there are a lot of ZM users.
jphoto Posted January 1, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted January 1, 2007 Thank you all for your help. I'll probably get a uv filter at first and slim it down a bit if needed. I can use my 52mm filters with a step up ring for b&w work if vignetting will be an issue. Peter, thanks for the link to RFF, I wasn't familiar with that place before. jphoto Posted January 24, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted January 24, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just in case if someone will be puzzled with the same question, I bought a 46mm B+W uv-haze filter and it works fine with no sign of vignetting. xjr Posted January 24, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 24, 2007 To make sure suggest slim type B+W or HOYA multicoated. Both about 3mm thick. I use same on my 18mm Nikkor and 24mm M.
