sanyasi Posted June 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a longstanding user of Lightroom, but I take each photo as it comes and then adjust it. I have read references to profiles for the M9. I have no idea what the considerations are in creating one, but would be interested in learning how I should go about it or to see what others have done. I am assuming that people will create new profiles for LR3, but maybe that isn't even necessary. Thanks for any information. Jack Siegel
Advertisement Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hi sanyasi, Take a look here Lightroom 3 M9 Profiles. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted June 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 11, 2010 Jack - my experience is that the default settings on LR are not so good for M9 DNGs - especially the black clipping set to 5 and brightness at 50. My defaults (more empirical than theory driven + informed by various musings from Jeff Schewe) are in the screen shot below. Works for me... Welcome, dear visitor! hoppyman Posted June 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2010 Jack, Chris is talking about DEFAULT settings of course. Those are meant to be the starting point for you to develop from and the best settings can and should vary a lot from file to file. Chris has illustrated a very low black point which will preserve the darkest of dark values but not affect colour rendition per se. If you are developing M9 files now in LR3 you are using by default the new processing engine which has significant improvements in colour and noise performance for M files to begin with. Profiles are more about how your camera interpets colour values and of course there is no 'right' choice, only what makes the most sense for you. In my experience the Adobe Standard profile which will be applied for your M9 files works very well and subjectively seems neutral and pleasing to me. One of our expert members (Sandy) has produced an excellent custom M9 profile that works very well for me and I also have one made for my camera using Adobe's methodology. No penalty at all to try variations with your files. Send me a note with you email addy and I can send you my custom profile (and a copy of Sandy's if you cannot locate that). JColen Posted June 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 12, 2010 It is my understanding that within 3 weeks there will be a new firmware (for the M9) that will address many color balance issues. Especially - Auto White Balance.
